Applications/Collaboration Framework TEIN2 Applications/Collaborations Framework Session 1 – 15 May th TEIN2 Technical Meeting Bandung, Indonesia

Applications/Collaboration Framework 2 What we should try to achieve in these sessions  The EC has made it clear that there needs to evidence of the value of the TEIN2 network infrastructure  Although there have been many demonstrations in areas such as telemedicine, there needs to be a broader base of application areas to illustrate the value of the network to more TEIN2 communities  Although we know or feel that TEIN2 is contributing to innovation and collaboration in our region, this needs to be documented  The Asia-Kyushu Advanced Medical Network has a comprehensive list of what has been achieved in telemedicine (but broader than just TEIN2)  Other application areas are not well documented, we need to address this

Applications/Collaboration Framework 3 What has been achieved since the last TC meeting? (1)  At Manila, all TEIN2 partners participated in at least one of three remote telemedicine demos – India and the US were also involved. 12 countries and around 100 people helped make this a success  DVTS has now been depoyed in all TEIN2 member countries (but need to extend the reach within many countries to improve the value)  Preparations for demonstrators for Xi’An have received much attention (more on this tomorrow)  Kanchana and colleagues ran a multimedia workshop in Europe  Shimizu-san and Okamura-san will visit Europe soon for meetings with surgeons and network engineers to engage for Xi’An

Applications/Collaboration Framework 4 What has been achieved since the last TC meeting? (2)  An opportunity has arisen for potential TEIN2 participation in Microsoft Research’s ConferenceXP Pacific Rim initiative (demo tomorrow)  Participation in the 1 st Global GEOGrid workshop and gave joint presentation with ThaiGrid on TEIN2 performance for PRAGMA sites (more tomorrow in NOC session) and from Pakorn on earth observation  Participation in Internet2 South Asia workshop with theme of enhancing R&E connectivity to and within South Asia (Hina Sharma demo at Xi’An)  Engagement with radioastronomers in China, Netherlands and Australia (demo at Xi’An)

Applications/Collaboration Framework 5 What has been achieved since the last TC meeting? (3)  Proposal to support a new “ResearchChannel” like e-learning initiative submitted to and approved by ASEAN under the ASEAN Virtual Institute of Science and Technology (AVIST) program – refer report from Kanchana  Potential to use TEIN2 for e-social sciences initiative involving UK e- Science Centre, China and Western Australia  Discussion on using TEIN2 to transfer data from new Thai THEOS satellite between Norway, Thailand and Japan  Regular videoconferences using TEIN2 between Royal Children’s Hospital and Yogyakarta, Indonesia and well as NHP, Hanoi  E-learning initiatives – need more documentation All in all – a lot of activity (this list is not complete)

Applications/Collaboration Framework 6 We need to agree a strategy to develop the portfolio  The draft spreadsheet circulated was a first cut at trying to capture key information – it may not be the best form – suggestions welcome  Initial strategy on which the spreadsheet was based:  identify the main application/collaboration focus areas that TEIN2 can help to facilitate (also specific areas within the discipline)  determine what information needs to be captured  identify “user communitiy groups” (eg APAN WGs, PRAGMA, etc)  identify “lead” person(s) for each focus area  identify a “coordinator/point person” for each country (could be >1)  identify ways of capturing the data and keeping it updated

Applications/Collaboration Framework 7 Proposed Focus Areas  Telemedicine (telesurgery training; teleconsultation/assessment)  Emerging Infections (could be part of “disaster/natural hazards” scenario)  Telesciences (earth monitoring, GEOSS, climate change, biosciences, astronomy, access to remote instruments and resources)  Teleteaching  Preservation of Digital Heritage  Collaboration Tools and Immersive Environments  Measurement and Monitoring (coordinated by NOCs?)  What other Focus Ares would add value? – suggestions?

Applications/Collaboration Framework 8 What information needs to be captured?  Description of the activity (enough to be meaningful)  Note if demo or regular use  Dates or frequency (if in regular use)  Participants (institutions, countries, number of sites in each country)  Other relevant information depending on the activity

Applications/Collaboration Framework 9 Identify and engage with User Community Groups  Possibilities:  Telemedicine – APAN Medical WG  Emerging Infections – APAN Medical WG, PRAGMA Biosciences  Disaster Systems/GEOSS – APAN EM WG/ PDC/ NOAA/JAXA/other  Climate Change – APAN Earth Systems WG? Other?  Biosciences - ?  Remote Access to Scientic Instruments/Resources – APAN eScience WG, APAN Middleware WG

Applications/Collaboration Framework 10 Identify Lead Person(s) [Champions] for each Area  These people will act as the point-persons for the activity across all TEIN2 members as far as possible. We have some volunteers/default people  Telemedicine - Shimizu-san/Okamura-san  Teleteaching – Kanchana  Preservation of Digital Heritage – Faridah  Earth Monitoring/Disaster Systems - ?  Earth Systems/Climate Change - ?  Biosciences - ?  Remote Access to Instruments, Resources/ e-Science - ?  Collaboration Tools and Immersive Environments - ?  Measurement and Monitoring – NOC?

Applications/Collaboration Framework 11 Identify a Coordinator(s) for each country  China –  Indonesia -  Malaysia - Suhaimi  Philippines -  Thailand -  Vietnam -  Japan -  Korea -  Singapore -  Australia -

Applications/Collaboration Framework Indentify upcoming events that will use TEIN2  These can be powerful for illustrtion  How do we best capture information about these? 12

Applications/Collaboration Framework 13 Capturing the data and keeping the database up to date  Discussion………
