WHAT TO WRITE Spend 80% of your time listening Notes should be the highlights of what the teacher says Listen for cues such as “you need to remember this” or “ you’ll need to know this later”

TIPS AND TECHNIQUES Sit close to the front of the class Watch your teacher part of the time and your notebook the rest of the time If you have trouble ask your teacher if you can use a pocket tape recorder, have permission Make sure you can read what you write Include the date at the top of your notes Don’t write in complete sentences

BEFORE YOU START READING, ASK YOURSELF, “Why am I reading this? AND “What am I suppose to remember?” WHAT TO REMEMBER - know details/dates/names - main ideas/what happened -causes of events/their effects

HAVE A PLAN FOR READING. SQ3R SQ3R = Survey/Question/Read/Recite/Review

SURVEY look over what you have to read read the first and last paragraph -first paragraph introduces -last paragraph has a conclusion read -headlines/titles/subtitles/words in bold and italics -captions on charts and graphs

QUESTION what do you already know turn main headlines and bold or italic print into questions

READ look for details or examples in the text read the first and last sentences of each paragraph think what things would look like in your head/imagine

RECITE stop and answer your original question

REVIEW scan the different sections of what you have read state the main points write a summary or create your own personal study sheet

SIGNAL WORDS here are some signal words that give you a clue that something is important; many/likewise/in addition/next/finally/therefore/in conclusion/as a result/specifically/for instance/such as words that tell you that you are about to hear an opposite view are; however/yet/still/instead/even though
