Guidelines for the Management of a Life-Threatening Allergic Reaction:

ADMINISTRATION OF EPINEPHRINE AUTO-INJECTOR: TRAINING PROGRAM PART 1:

NURSING OBJECTIVES: To comply with D.O.E Health Services Policy and Procedural Requirements. To provide staff training by: *Educating staff in recognizing symptoms related to anaphylaxis. *Instruct staff in proper method of administering epinephrine auto-injector in the event of a life- threatening allergic reaction. *Specific!!! ONLY to those students who carry an epinephrine auto-injector for self administration.

HOW ARE YOU AFFECTED BY THIS LAW…..?????? ALL SCHOOL SPONSORED FUNCTIONS which includes: –Athletics –After school activities such as clubs –Field Trips

Because… All staff members should be aware of students “under their supervision” who may require administration of epinephrine. And……be prepared to take action.

What causes an allergic reaction????

TYPICAL ALLERGENS

WHAT HAPPENS TO THE ALLERGIC STUDENT Symptoms vary from: Mild to moderate to the severe, life threatening reactions….

MILD ALLERGIC REACTIONS INCLUDE: Mouth: itchy, tingling Skin: hives, rash, swelling Stomach/Gut: ache, nauseous General: chills, fatigue

ALLERGIC REACTION PRESENTING ON SKIN

SWOLLEN ARM FROM INSECT BITE

AS SYMPTOMS DEVELOP= WHAT TO EXPECT –Mouth –Skin –Stomach/Gut –General feeling –Heart –Lungs

HOW TO HELP… SOMEONE HAVING A SEVERE ALLERGIC REACTION

First…..RELAX…… AND BREATH!!!!!

INITIAL AND IMMEDIATE ACTION: Do not hesitate! Call … or have someone call for you. Student must ALWAYS be transported to Emergency Room, even if symptoms subside.

Epinephrine 2 - pak Jr. pak – less than 66 pounds Adult pak – over 66 pounds

PREPARING TO ADMINISTER EPINEPHRINE:

PULL OFF GRAY CAP

PRESS BLACK TIP TO OUTER THIGH AND PRESS UNTIL YOU HEAR A “CLICK” SOUND. HOLD SECONDS.

MASSAGE INJECTION SITE FOR 10 SECONDS Continue monitoring student Student must be transported to hospital

DISPOSAL OF INJECTOR GIVE USED INJECTOR TO FIRST – AID OR EMS PERSONNEL FOR DISPOSAL
