2 + Preview  When would I use an Epi-Pen?  How do I administer it?  What do I after?

3 + What is anaphylaxis? A severe, potentially fatal allergic reaction.

4 + Common causes of anaphylaxis: Foods allergies: Peanuts Tree nuts Shellfish Fish Other allergens: Latex Bee stings Antibiotics or medications

5 + Symptoms of anaphylaxis: When a person exhibits one of the following: skin, nose, mouth or gastrointestinal symptoms AND difficulty breathing such as wheezing, or decrease in blood pressure Or at least two of the following: skin symptoms or lip swelling decreased blood pressure gastrointestinal symptoms [When to use an Epi-Pen]

6 + Why epinephrine? Epinephrine must be given as a “shot” Dispensed as a self or auto- injector Must be given as soon as possible Delay in treatment can be fatal This medication can reverse symptoms immediately.

8 + How to administer an Epi-Pen 1. Remove from case and uncap lid  Hold in closed fist with orange tip down

9 + How to administer an Epi-Pen 3. Press firmly into middle outer thigh until “click” 4. Hold injector in place for 10 seconds

10 + How to administer an Epi-Pen 5. Replace injector back in case 6. Call 911 or take person to nearest emergency dept.
