Life Before President  In 1876 Theodore began college at Harvard  Theodore met Alice Hathaway, and he decided he wanted to marry her  In 1880, he graduated from college at Harvard  On February 2 nd, Alice Hathaway had her 1 st daughter, but she died in childbirth  Theodore later remarried Edith Kermit Crow, and had five children  In 1897, President McKinley made him Assistant Secretary of Navy  In 1898 he became governor of New York  In 1900 Theodore was made governor of New York  In 1900, Theodore was made Vice President to William McKinley  On February 4, 1901, McKinley was shot and killed, Theodore was made the new President
