Profession The term profession refers to an occupation, vocation or high-status career, usually involving prolonged academic training, formal qualifications and membership of a professional or regulatory body.

PROFESSION CONT., The term profession derives from the Latin: "to swear (an oath)". The oath referred to adherence to ethical standards, which include practitioner / client confidentiality, truthfulness, and to be an expert in one's calling, all three of these being practiced above all for the benefit of the client. Latin

Characteristics of a Profession... Specialized education –standardized in a collegial setting Body of knowledge on which performance is based –intellectual characteristics –nursing theory development Ability to deliver a unique service to others Ethics –value of worth and dignity of others –Social policy statement and Code for Nurses

The Code of Ethical Principles and Standards of Professional Practice 1- practice their profession with integrity, honesty, truthfulness and adherence to the absolute obligation to safeguard the public trust. 2- act according to the highest standards and visions of their organization, profession and conscience
