SB 373 “School DEEL”  Overview  Highlights  Partnerships  Implementation  Resources  New Legislation

Overview  “School DEEL” [School Diversion and Environmental Education Law.] Creates new integrated education programs and resources for schools. Encourages school districts to implement resource conservation programs. Mandates the State Board of Education to incorporate environmental concepts in the new science framework.

Highlights  Develop a Unified Education Strategy on the Environment for K-12 grades.  Create an Environmental Ambassador Pilot Program [EAPP].  Implement an Unified Education Grant Program [UES].

Partnerships  Over 10 state agencies and departments are stakeholders in this program.  Joint resources provided by local government, regional state boards, utilities.  Cross dialogue and partnership between school districts and their communities.

Implementation  Environmental Ambassador Pilot Program Seven participating school districts. Two year funding total of between $80,000 $102,000 per grantee. Grantees focus on development and documentation of replicable education and resource conservation activities.  Unified Education Grant Program Thirteen participating school districts. Two year funding: Phase I $27,000 and Phase II up to $38,000 per grantee.

Current Status Excellent long-term program in diversion recycling, composting, gardening, energy and water conservation at elementary school Serves as a demonstration site for numerous schools regarding the “mechanical aspects” of recycling and diversion Efforts need to be connected with classroom instructional practices and standards and expanded to the middle school campus, where feasible Oak Grove USD

Grant funds will be used to: Provide professional development for District teachers Integrate “Big Ideas” in state curriculum standards with waste management, energy and water Develop integrated curriculum units connecting standards across disciplines Give teachers release time to refine and adjust grade-level articulation Help students identify school and community problems and address needs Oak Grove USD

New Legislation  AB 1548 Education principles on the environment. Science textbook adoption criteria. New education content standards. Model curriculum. Education & Environmental Regulation Environmental Education Account.
