The Slave Trade and Colonization

THE SLAVE TRADE Triangular Trade A pattern of trade that occurred between Europe, the Americas and Africa. From Africa – Slaves and gold and ivory. From the Americas – Rum, tobacco, cotton, molasses. From Europe – Manufactured goods.

The Middle Passage Enslaved Africans were transported from Africa to the West Indies. It was common for people to perish on slave ships. Hundreds of people were chained together by their hands and feet in dangerous conditions.

Colonization of Africa Reasons for Colonization New Imperialism Raw materials – cotton, rubber, ivory, diamonds, gold, tin and copper. Source of cheap labor. Positive trade balance – a country exports more good than it imports. Change African culture to be more like European culture. Scramble for Africa – Countries competing for land and power. Berlin Conference was a series of meetings in which European nations divided the continent of Africa.

Impact of the Colonial Period Negative Impact African Tribes had no control over their own countries. Wars, riots and protest were common. New borders separated families and tribes. Positive Impact Schools and hospitals were built Economy was improved Roads and Railroads were built Technology improved African lives
