Eating at restaurants in USA Eating at restaurants is much different than in Korea. Here are some hints to help you!

First, the food is very different. You can find American food in Korea, but how often do you eat it??? What American restaurants can you find in Korea??? Why are restaurants different?

TGI Fridays

Outback Steakhouse

Pizza Hut

 Reservations  Personal Server  No yeogiyo button  Tipping the server Things that are different

Two big differences  No Yeogiyo button  Tiping the Server

 In Korea, if you need something there is usually a button to ask for help. A person will come to your table.  In USA, you have a “server,” or a single special person to help your table. What can you say to get help??? No Yeogiyo button Excuse me

Servers in USA are paid by the customers, not the restaurant. The customer usually gives 15-20% as tip. So, if you and your friend eat dinner, and the bill is $20.00, how much do you tip? Usually $ If the server is really good, you give more. If the server is really bad, and the meal is bad, you tip less. Tip the Server

Look at your paper A common dialog

What is on the menu??? Every place is a little different. In Korea, if you go to a Kimbap restaurant, the menu is always the same. Usually, American menus have a description of the food.  Korea:

USA (and other places)

 At a restaurant like TGI Fridays, you can have 3 different “courses.”  Different Courses: 1- Appetizer 2- Entrée 3- Dessert Courses

 Appetizers are like a snack.  Perhaps you are really hungry and want to eat something soon.  You can buy something for everyone to share before the meal. Appetizers

Potato Skins– like french fries

Onion rings

Chicken wings

 An entrée is what your meal is.  How are entrées different in USA???  Many people do not get appetizers and only get an entrée. Entrée

Bacon cheeseburger

ribs

Chicken salad

Korea vs. USA USA Personal plate and meal French fries Meat Size Korea  Communal eating. Everyone has the same thing.  Rice  More rice, less meat  Smaller sizes. Serve yourself

 Everyone’s favorite part of the meal.  You can order something sweet to end the meal  What is your favorite dessert in Korea??? Dessert

Ice cream cake

Brownie and ice cream

Milk shake

 We tip the server in USA.  15-20% of the bill.  Most cell-phones have a tip calculator to help people who are bad at math!! Don’t Forget!!!

 I was a server at a restaurant during college.  I was very good at the job, but I also hated it.  Who knows Fondue??? Once upon a time…

The Melting Pot

 Like TGI Fridays, Fondue can have many courses.  Appetizer = cheese fondue (bread, apples, vegetables)  Entrée = raw meat, you cook it!  Dessert = chocolate fondue (rice crispy treats, cheese cake, brownies, strawberries, bananas, marshmellows) Fondue is from Switzerland! Fondue

Cheese fondue

Entrée (uncooked)

Dessert

Some start on fire

If you travel to an English-speaking country, this will be very important to know! Eating is one of the most exciting things in a new country, don’t be afraid to try something new in the country. Any questions? Finished
