CITIZENSHIP PYRAMID SIDE 2: Sources of Rights & Responsibilities

A. The President. C. Different places, depending on the level of citizenship. B. Police officers. D. Long documents nobody can read or understand. Where do rights and responsibilities come from?

NATION United States Constitution In the United States, we are guaranteed a list of rights in our Constitution.

NATION United States Laws Rights and responsibilities also come from laws passed by the U.S. Congress!

Record it here! U.S. Constitution/Laws STATE CITY SOURCES HOME SCHOOL NATION NATION United States Constitution & Laws

Each state has its own constitution and laws that list rights and responsibilities of the state’s citizens. State Constitution & Laws STATE

SOURCES Record it here! State Constitution & Laws State Constitution STATE STATE CITY HOME SCHOOL NATION U.S. Constitution/Laws

City Charter CITY Cities usually have a city charter that tells how the city will run. It usually includes some rights and responsibilities of city citizens.

City Ordinances CITY Cities laws called ordinances list more rules that apply in the city.

School Handbook SCHOOL Most schools have a school handbook that lists the students’ rights and responsibilities. (Mostly responsibilities – more about that later!)

CITIZENSHIP PYRAMID SIDE 3: Rights!

A. Things adults get to do. C. Electric bulbs that let you read in the dark. B. Privileges the President has. D. A privilege or a claim to something. Rights are…

You would need a pyramid the size of the ones in EGYPT to list all the rights citizens have at each level. Let’s just list a few examples: RIGHTS

Guarantees really BIG rights like freedom of speech, freedom to worship, and the right to a jury trial in some kinds of cases. United States Constitution NATION

These rights apply to everyone living in the United States! United States Constitution NATION

Voting in federal elections, running for federal office, and serving on a jury are rights only for U.S. citizens. United States Constitution NATION

Record it here! Freedom of speech & worship; right to vote & serve on jury RIGHTS United States Constitution NATION STATE CITY HOME SCHOOL NATION

Your state constitution might guarantee the right to a free education or equal rights for men and women. State Constitution & Laws STATE State constitutions usually repeat many of the rights listed in the U.S. Constitution. But often they add more…

Record it here! Right to free education; equal rights for men and women RIGHTS State Constitution & Laws STATE STATE CITY HOME SCHOOL NATION Why do you think the U.S. Constitution doesn’t guarantee the right to an education? Should it? Freedom of speech & worship; right to vote & serve on jury

City Charter & Ordinances CITY This gives you the right to services your city provides, like sidewalks or parks.

RIGHTS Right to use sidewalks and parks Right to free education; equal rights for men and women Record it here! City Charter & Ordinances STATE CITY CITY SCHOOL HOME NATION Would it be a problem if the U.S. Constitution talked about sidewalks? Freedom of speech & worship; right to vote & serve on jury

School Handbook SCHOOL Hey! I don’t see any rights in my school handbook. All I see is stuff kids aren’t supposed to do!

Right s Sometimes rights… …are the flip side of responsibilities. Responsibilities

So if the handbook says you can’t do something… …it is silently giving you the right to do something else! No wallets with chains! You have the right to bring a regular wallet.

So school handbooks are usually the opposite of the U.S. Constitution because they list responsibilities instead of rights. Try out some examples of how responsibilities can silently tell you what your rights are!

“Do not throw food in the lunch room” is silently saying you have the right to: Eat in the lunch room!

Attend athletic activities! “Students must be seated during athletic activities” is silently saying you have the right to:

Wear appropriate T-shirts! “No T-shirts with inappropriate slogans” is silently saying you have the right to:

RIGHTS Record it here! Attend sports, eat in lunchroom Right to free education; Equal rights for men and women Right to use sidewalks and parks School Handbook SCHOOL CITY SCHOOL STATE HOME NATION What rights do you have at your school? Freedom of speech & worship; right to vote & serve on jury

The adults in charge at home give you rights that only apply at home. For example, you probably have the right to eat the food they buy, and you might have the right to watch TV and play video games. Adults in Charge HOME

Record it here! TV, video games, eat food Right to free education; Equal rights for men and women Right to use sidewalks and parks Attend sports, eat in lunchroom RIGHTS Adults in Charge HOME SCHOOL CITY STATE HOME NATION Remember: These are all just examples! Freedom of speech & worship; right to vote & serve on jury

RIGHTS Check Your Work: TV, video games, eat food Right to free education; Equal rights for men and women Right to use sidewalks and parks Attend sports, eat in lunchroom STATE CITY HOME SCHOOL NATION Freedom of speech & worship; right to vote & serve on jury

Freedom of speech Run for federal office Right to a jury trial Which Rights Are For EVERYONE Living in the U.S.? Vote in federal elections

CITIZENSHIP PYRAMID SIDE 4: RESPONSIBILITIES!

A. Things adults have to do. C. Duties to other people, the government, or to society. B. Unpleasant activities nobody wants to do. D. Chores you do after school. Responsibilities are…

HOME For example, you might have to sweep the floor, get groceries… or even wash the dog! The adults in charge at home give you duties you are only responsible for at home.

Record it here! Sweep floor, wash dishes & dog RESPONSIBILITIES HOME SCHOOL CITY STATE HOME NATION What responsibilities do you have at home?

SCHOOL Well! I don’t have any trouble figuring out what my responsibilities at school are! They’re all listed right in the school handbook!

SCHOOL At school, you are responsible for following the rules. You already learned that school rules usually tell you what NOT to do.

Sweep floor, wash dishes & dog Behave in class No gum, hats, weapons RESPONSIBILITIES Record it here! SCHOOL SCHOOL CITY STATE HOME NATION What responsibilities do you have at your school?

City charters often contain rules, kind of like a school handbook. CITY Laws that apply only within a city are called ordinances.

If a city ordinance tells you not to do something... …then you know you have a responsibility not to do that thing. CITY NO person may have a dog that barks at night

Even if the ordinance just says what the punishment is… …you can still figure out you have a responsibility not to do that thing. CITY There is a $50 fine for flying a kite in the park.

Record it here! RESPONSIBILITIES Sweep floor, wash dishes & dog Behave in class No gum, hats, weapons No barking dogs, No kites in park CITY SCHOOL CITY STATE HOME NATION What responsibilities do you have in your town?

Paying TAXES is one of the biggest responsibilities you’ll find in a state constitution … For example, your state might have taxes on property you own, on income you earn, and even on the stuff you buy at the store! STATE

Behave in class No gum, hats, weapons No barking dogs, No kites in park Property tax, income tax, sales tax Sweep floor, wash dishes & dog Record it here! RESPONSIBILITIES STATE CITY SCHOOL STATE HOME NATION What do you think your state uses your taxes for?

NATION The Constitution does not have a list of responsibilities, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t any. United States Constitution & Laws The Constitution creates a government that can’t work if people don’t participate!

NATION Could you have a jury trial if everyone refused to do jury duty? United States Constitution & Laws Jury duty is a responsibility U.S. citizens have to others and to the government.

NATION What would happen if NOBODY showed up to vote?? Voting is a responsibility U.S. citizens have to our society and the government. United States Constitution & Laws

? NATION What good is voting if you have no idea what you’re voting for? Staying informed is a responsibility we have to society. United States Constitution & Laws

NATION Sometimes rights and responsibilities clash! What would happen if you yelled “Fire!” in a crowded theater? The responsibility to public safety comes before the right to free speech! Everyone in the U.S. has a responsibility to obey the law! United States Constitution & Laws

RESPONSIBILITIES Record it here! Sweep floor, wash dishes & dog Jury duty; voting; staying informed; don’t put people at risk Behave in class No gum, hats, weapons No barking dogs, No kites in park Property tax, income tax, sales tax NATION United States Constitution CITY STATE SCHOOL HOME NATION Can you think of any other responsibilities you have to your country?

Jury duty; Voting; Staying informed; don’t put people at risk Behave in class No gum, hats, weapons No barking dogs, No kites in park Property tax, income tax, sales tax Sweep floor, wash dishes & dog Check Your Work: STATE CITY HOME SCHOOL NATION RESPONSIBILITIES
