FCCLA’s Mission To promote personal growth and leadership development through Family and Consumer Sciences education. Focusing on the multiple roles of family member, wage earner, and community leader, members develop skills for life through character development, creative and critical thinking, interpersonal communications, practical knowledge, and career preparation.

Purposes 1. To provide opportunities for personal development and preparation for adult life. 2. To strengthen the function of the family as a basic unit of society. 3. To encourage democracy through cooperative action in the home and community. 4. To encourage individual and group involvement in helping achieve global cooperation and harmony. 5. To promote greater understanding between youth and adults. 6. To provide opportunities for making decisions and for assuming responsibilities. 7. To prepare for the multiple roles of men and women in today’s society. 8. To promote Family and Consumer Sciences education and related occupations.

Who is eligible to be a member? Any student who is taking or has taken a course in Family and Consumer Sciences, or acceptable course as determined by the state Department of Education (middle school through grade 12), is eligible for active membership in an organized chapter within their school. Once the state and national dues are paid, the student will be an official affiliated member. Affiliated members are eligible to hold office, make motions, and vote. Affiliated members can expect to receive Teen Times magazine, a membership card, and all the privileges that come with being a member of the only Career and Technical Student Organization with family as its central focus.

Getting started: 1.Seek out those who would be interested in joining FCCLA. Remember, they must have taken, or be currently enrolled in, a Family and Consumer Sciences course or a related course as determined by the state department of education. 2.Collect membership dues and affiliate at state and national levels. You must be affiliated in order to use the FCCLA name. 3.Identify chapter leaders. Hold an election of officers for your chapter. Use FCCLA…The Handbook to Ultimate Leadership and The Ultimate Officer Handbook & Training Manual for more information on how to effectively choose chapter officers. 4.Train members to promote the “3 R’s” of membership—Recruit, Retain, and Recognize. Carry out a variety of the “3 R’s” to suit your chapter’s and school’s needs. 5.Report results and apply for recognition at the state and national level. 6.Enjoy the rewards of a stronger chapter.

National Programs FCCLA provides a menu of programs with ready-to-use materials to guide students through creating and carrying out projects. The national programs encourage members to enhance their personal growth and leadership development skills. As students plan projects and execute ideas, they experience the satisfaction of making a difference in their own lives, their families, their schools, and their communities.

Dynamic Leadership A national program that helps young people build leadership skills. It provides information, activities, and project ideas to help young people learn about leadership; recognize the lifelong benefits of leadership skills, practice leadership skills through FCCLA involvement and become strong leaders for families, careers, and communities. Dynamic Leadership interacts with other national programs.

Career Connection A national program that guides students to link their options and skills for success in their families, careers, and communities. In conjunction with the Career Connection national program, Leaders at Work recognizes FCCLA members who create projects to strengthen leadership skills on the job.

Community Service A national program that guides students to develop, plan, carry out, and evaluate projects that improve the quality of life in their communities.

Families First A national peer education program through which students gain a better understanding of how families work and learn skills to become strong family members. In conjunction with Families First, Japanese Exchange is a scholarship opportunity for FCCLA members to travel to Japan for four-to- six weeks as an exchange student. This scholarship is funded by the Kikkoman Corporation and administered by Youth For Understanding-USA. Scholarships are worth more than $6,995 each.

A national program through which students strive to save lives by educating adults and young people about traffic safety and supporting enforcement of local rules and regulations regarding community traffic safety. FACTS—Families Acting for Community Traffic Safety

Financial Fitness A national peer education program that involves students teaching one another how to make, save, and spend money wisely.

Power of One A national program designed to help students find and use their personal power. Members set their own goals, work to achieve them, and enjoy the results.

Student Body A national peer education program that helps young people learn to eat right, be fit, and make healthy choices.

Competitive Events Involvement in FCCLA’s competitive events offers members the opportunity to expand their leadership potential and develop the skills for life necessary in families, communities, and workplaces. Members can demonstrate family and consumer sciences skills, career skills, and interpersonal skills. National Meetings Nationally sponsored meetings allow students to travel, participate in competition, have fun, and network with young people from across the country.

Capitol Leadership Join youth leaders from across the country in the nation’s capital to meet with elected officials, learn about trends in education, develop leadership skills, and participate in team-building activities.

National Cluster Meetings National Cluster Meetings, held in November, provide an opportunity for students and advisers to come together to expand leadership skills, explore pathways, and discover new ways to put FCCLA’s national programs into action.

National Leadership Conference Gather together with more than 5,000 students and advisers to elect the new National Executive Council, participate in competitive events, attend dynamic general sessions, and explore ways to enhance leadership skills in family, career, and community.

Membership Achievement Awards FCCLA Members Recognizes current FCCLA members who must recruit at least three new members who affiliate at the state and national level. FCCLA Chapters Recognizes chapters that affiliate on the state and national level 100% of those students enrolled in the adviser’s own FACS classes at your school. FCCLA Advisers Recognizes chapter advisers using the FCCLA Planning Process. Chapter advisers must demonstrate how one national program was used to incorporate the 3 R’s of membership. State Association Recognizes three states who will be awarded for excellent participation at the national level. States receiving this award will have the highest participation in individual and chapter program award applications, scholarship applications, adult and adviser awards, and new chapters. This recognition program accounts for diversity—all chapters that affiliate with their state and national headquarters by March 1 are eligible for recognition in one or more of the following categories.
