VINCENT SIMONE DIY GREEN HOUSE CONTEMPORARY ISSUES IN NUTRITION

BENEFITS OF GREENHOUSE GARDENING Save on grocery expenses Protection against harsh weather Optimum growing environment for plants Pest control Can start seeds earlier in the season

HOME GREEN HOUSES SAVE ENERGY Produce bought in grocery stores may have been trucked thousands of miles away. Produce stores use more energy to keep the produce sections cold. Trips driving back and forth from grocery stores also uses more energy Numerous ways to make home green houses more ecofriendly.

OTHER BENEFITS Producing your own plants or vegetables allows the gardener to avoid buying from companies who use pesticides and unnatural fertilizers The greenhouse owner is the one who controls how the plants are grown so they can assure that the food or plants are entirely organic. Saves money buying produce Better for environment then conventionally grown Added health benefits by growing organic produce

IS ORGANIC BETTER THEN CONVENTIONAL? ASK A FRUIT FLY Research shows that fruit flys that feed on organically grown bananas and potatoes fared better then fed on conventionally raised produce. Flies are easier to study because of short life span Study tracked numerous effects on flies including fertility, stress resistance, and longevity. While this study can’t theorize the effects on human health it provides a good model for additional studies on organic vs. conventionally grown produce Fruit fly experiment
