Family Personality  Family Legacies, Traditions, & Rituals  How personality affects values  Family Atmosphere  Family Decision Making  Interdependence

Families & The Media:  Think about a family from a TV Series or Movie 1. Name the TV show or movie 2. What type of parents are represented? 3. Is it a functional or dysfunctional family? WHY? 4. Name a way in which the family spends time together 5. Name a problem the family has faced. How did they deal with it? 6. How many children are in the family? What are their names? 7. Would you like to be a part of this family? Why or why not? 8. What makes this family interesting to watch?

Stage 1: Start as a couple  Make important decisions together:  Housing: How close to family?  Furnishings: Find on tight budget.  Education & career: Direct impact on finances  Money: separate or shared accounts. Who pays bills?  Children: Decide to have children or not have them due to choice or circumstance. (event) Stages of Family Development: Life Cycle Development is the process of growth and change over the course of your life. Life cycle= stages of growth and change over course of life.

Stage 2: Parenting  The expanding years – new members are added to the family  The developing family – children enter school there are a lot more activities outside of the home  The launching process – the “exit” of children from the home; children are on their own physically & financially

Stage 3: Middle Years  When all the children have left the home, the family becomes a couple again and now have the time and money for their own interests—separate and together.  Examples?  Empty Nest—When a couple’s children become adults and move out of the family home.

Stage 4: Retirement  Not everyone views retirement the same.  People that have planned and saved for retirement, are more likely to have positive feelings about it. People who have not saved enough have concern.  Some people fear retirement and wonder what they will do with themselves. They are left feeling like they have no purpose.
