Things to watch out for in final paper No contractions – Don’t  do not, can’t  cannot, won’t  would not Affect (verb) versus Effect (noun) – Taco Bell affects my stomach in a really bad way. – After about an hour, the effects are noxious.

Watch out for rhetorical questions – One can be effective After one, it loses its effect quickly! Look for wordiness – Cut it out Simpler sentences are more powerful

Watch out for who is saying, stating, etc Wrong: The New York Times states, “XYZ” (). Right: Clint Brayloke, a New York Times writer, claims, “XYZ” (). Books don’t talk or argue, the author does!

Quotation Marks Wrong: He wished that” I could end it all “(Blatt 21). Right: He wished that “I could end it all” (Blatt 21). Wrong: Surinsky argues, “I taught them this.” (Fhat). Right: Surinsky argues, “I taught them this” (Fhat).

Topic sentence Claim #1 Evidence Justification Claim #2 Evidence Justification Claim #3 Evidence Justification Transitional sentence (sets up the next paragraph)
