What ways has the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms has fostered recognition of individual rights in Canada. Pg 94-101

Definition The charter is part of Canada’s Constitution The constitution is the highest law in Canada It is very hard to change, the fact that the charter of rights and freedoms was added to the constitution in the 1980’s shows the importance of guaranteeing individual and collective rights to Canadians.

Definition continued The charter was designed to provide a standard of individual and collective rights across the country Using this legislation, Canadians can challenge laws that they feel restrict their rights. (Not very many countries provide a way for their citizens to legally challenge the gov’t)

Rights and Freedoms in the Charter include Democratic rights:include the right to vote Fundamental rights: freedom to express opinon, choose religion, organize peaceful gatherings, associate with whom ever you want Mobility rights: freedom of movement, the right to leave (emigrate) or come into (immigrate) different provinces and the country

Legal rights: provide protection and processes within legal system Equality rights: the right to be free of discrimination because of race, national or ethinic origin, religion, gender, age or mental or physical disability

In the charter it states that all these rights are subject to limitations. With your partner discuss what that means? Why would there be limitations to peoples rights? What kinds of situations would there be a limitation to your rights? Be prepared to share your answers
