They were being persecuted in England. They were affair of losing their English Protestant identities. Why did the Puritans go to Holland and why did they leave Holland?

What did the Puritans believe? -Most of humanity was damned for eternity, except for a few saved by the death of Jesus. -The Puritans were unsure whether they were “elect” or “unregenerate” -They were unsure if they were saved, so they looked f or signs : - you could feel the grace of good in emotional st ates - you could see signs in your behavior and the w orld around you. - Puritans looked closely at the world and their lives for these signs… that is why they wrote so much

Where’s your mo ney gone?

How did the Puritans govern themselves? -They used contracts, like the contract (10 commandments) God made with humanity. -- However it wasn’t a democracy because all people were expected to be good Purita ns…. No acceptance of other religions or th oughts. -- the elect should have more say than the damned

Oh dear!

-It was the word of God… how they should live their lives -The Bible was the handbook by which they lived their lives -They looked at it for signs they were “elect” by comparing it to their lives What role did the bible play in the lives of the Puritans?

What was the extended metaphor Bradstreet used in her poem? She compared heaven to the perfect home.

How do Bradstreet’s Puritan beliefs give her strength to lose her house? She believes she is one of the saved and will go to heaven. She believes all her experiences are a sign of God’s love… the lose of her possessions is a gift from God as a lesson to value spiritual matters.

Rowlandson uses allusions to illustrate how her suffering relates to the bible. She sees them as a sign she is one of the saved. How and why does Rowlandson use allusions in her narrative? Give one exa mple from the text.

They were eating horrible food such as insects, horse ears, and rotting meat. How do we know Rowlandson’s captors were desperate for food?

Only a few are saved. If his listener is not saved, the only reason the listener hasn’t fallen into hell is God is holding him up. What was the main idea of Edwards’ sermon?
