doc.: IEEE /462r0 IEEE / San Francisco / July 2003 July 2003 Jean-Michel Lauriol, AlcatelSlide 2 TIA TR-41 TR-41 : User Premises Telecommunications Requirements Addresses standards for telecommunications terminal equipment and systems, specifically those used for voice service, integrated voice and data service, and Internet Protocol (IP) applications. Overview of TIA TR-41 activities in May 03 : r1

doc.: IEEE /462r0 IEEE / San Francisco / July 2003 July 2003 Jean-Michel Lauriol, AlcatelSlide 3 TR-41 VoIP over WLAN Projects Why ? –Need for VoWLAN handset interoperability Based on IEEE standards, Wi-Fi Alliance deals with only layers 1 and 2 TIA is the right standardisation body to address end-to-end interoperability –TIA already specified wired terminals (IP phone, …) interoperability requirements (TIA/IS-811) VoWLAN projects launched in Q inside TR- 41 –see Press Release :

doc.: IEEE /462r0 IEEE / San Francisco / July 2003 July 2003 Jean-Michel Lauriol, AlcatelSlide 4 Scope of TR-41 VoIP over WLAN Projects - 1 Mission : –requirements for enabling VoIP telephony communications via WLAN in a corporate environment Goals : –not duplicate efforts –reference existing and drafts standards (IEEE , WFA, IETF,...), if necessary develop new specifications.

doc.: IEEE /462r0 IEEE / San Francisco / July 2003 July 2003 Jean-Michel Lauriol, AlcatelSlide 5 Scope of TR-41 VoIP over WLAN Projects - 2 Define interoperability requirements: –needed WLAN architecture for voice applications –« VoWLAN handset profile » concept –Telephonometry –location for Emergency Calling service New doc TIA 1003 New doc TIA 1002 TBD Update doc TSB 146

doc.: IEEE /462r0 IEEE / San Francisco / July 2003 July 2003 Jean-Michel Lauriol, AlcatelSlide 6 Scope of future TIA 1002 document -1 Project : PN , “Requirements for a Wireless LAN Based IP Telephony Subsystem” TIA interoperability requirements shall be compliant with WFA & IEEE specifications Voice requirements need enhanced specifications (11e, 11i, …) : –Living document Define interactions between WLAN and upper layers (e.g.. global MSC)

doc.: IEEE /462r0 IEEE / San Francisco / July 2003 July 2003 Jean-Michel Lauriol, AlcatelSlide 7 Scope of future TIA 1002 document -2 Reference model

doc.: IEEE /462r0 IEEE / San Francisco / July 2003 July 2003 Jean-Michel Lauriol, AlcatelSlide 8 Scope of future TIA 1002 document -3 Main High level requirements : – Infra-structure mode –IP Core network based on IPV4 –Support Power Save mode as defined in –Support of multiple Voice VLANs per AP –Level of QoS for a moving WT shall not be significantly decreased due to layer 2 handovers, IP roaming and re-authentication process –Possible to perform authentication process through WLAN smart card inside WT –Possible to assign IP address dynamically

doc.: IEEE /462r0 IEEE / San Francisco / July 2003 July 2003 Jean-Michel Lauriol, AlcatelSlide 9 Scope of future TIA 1002 document -4 Mobility –L2 and L3 handovers L3 handover is a key issue –VLAN (dedicated voice VLAN ids) Security is defined at several levels –define suitable authentication method above EAP for seamless mobility –Investigate end-to-end security based on standard telephony protocol (e.g. H.235, …) QoS –Mandatory features to support voice

doc.: IEEE /462r0 IEEE / San Francisco / July 2003 July 2003 Jean-Michel Lauriol, AlcatelSlide 10 Scope of future TIA 1003 document Project : PN , “Requirements for a Wireless LAN Based IP Telephony Endpoint” Will be patterned after TIA/IS-811 but will cover products with a WLAN interface instead of an Ethernet Interface In addition to WLAN support, it will address requirements for : Display and keypad Acoustic performances : Pointer to new telephonometry document Network and security requirements Power management Telephony features description Control protocol requirements (SIP, H.323 and Megaco)

doc.: IEEE /462r0 IEEE / San Francisco / July 2003 July 2003 Jean-Michel Lauriol, AlcatelSlide 11 Telephonometry - 1 Current Status : Transmission requirements of wireline VoIP phone sets are defined in ANSI/TIA/EIA/-810-A specification approved December 19, This specification does not address wireless VoIP phone sets ! Aim of the new project : Develop a specific standard for wireless VoIP handsets.

doc.: IEEE /462r0 IEEE / San Francisco / July 2003 July 2003 Jean-Michel Lauriol, AlcatelSlide 12 Telephonometry - 2 Why ? Due to small shape, wireless handset does not have same electro-acoustic features as corded phone set (e.g. Low intrinsic TCLw). Wireless handset shall operate in noisy environment (e.g. corridor, meeting room, manufacturing space). Work still in progress within TR-41 for handling this new topic : Should be discussed during the next TR-41 session.

doc.: IEEE /462r0 IEEE / San Francisco / July 2003 July 2003 Jean-Michel Lauriol, AlcatelSlide 13 TIA/EIA TSB-146 IP telephony Support for Emergency Calling Service Problem to be solved : –Localization of IP phones and Mobile Phones in corporate environment. –Ideally, accuracy should be chosen so as to differentiate between floors Current solution –SNMP (LAN equipment or remote powering device) –DHCP tracker –Bluetooth –Other ?

doc.: IEEE /462r0 IEEE / San Francisco / July 2003 July 2003 Jean-Michel Lauriol, AlcatelSlide 15 TR-41/ Liaison Need to establish official Liaison How to work together ? –Proposal : s between TR-41.4 chair and chairs of IEEE sub- groups (Which groups ?) TR-41.4 informs periodically the status of our works dealing with IEEE topics –Which contact points (WNG, 11e, 11i, …)? Next TR-41 meeting is week of August in Montreal (Canada).
