N. Africa, SW Asia and C. Asia

 Most of the region is in an arid or semi-arid climate zone  There are some Mediterranean climate zones along coast lines  Caused by rain shadow effect

 Water is scarce in most parts of the region  Many countries have to convert ocean water to drinking water

 The region has major river systems that start in nearby mountains

 Despite being one of the most arid regions on earth, it has two of the largest lakes in the world

 The Aral Sea is shrinking because the water has been diverted for massive irrigation projects in the surrounding desert areas  A vibrant fishing industry was ruined

 Agriculture depends on irrigation in most areas  Mediterranean climate areas have more options

 This region has many mineral deposits with oil being by far the most important

 Because of the four tectonic plates colliding to make the land masses, earthquakes are common
