Presentation transcript:

Northwest Leadership Foundation develops a new generation of leaders for lasting, positive change within the city of Tacoma. NLF finds talented individuals in overlooked places with undeveloped leadership potential.

Carol Milgard Breast Center’s mission is to provide sustainable breast health services to all women in our community.

“We want African Americans to take charge of their own health and move the needle on the data we’ve seen. One of the critical indicators for us is that community activists are working directly with health care professionals, and they both have ownership of addressing health care disparities. When those two groups see themselves walking hand in hand to address this issue, I think we will have achieved something really great.”

In partnership with The Paul G. Allen Family Foundation, The Boeing Company, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, The Seattle Foundation, and National Conference on Citizenship

What do we mean by civic health? A community’s capacity to work together to resolve collective problems

Why is it important? Strong civic health positively affects Local GDP Economic resilience Upward income mobility Public health Student achievement

How does greater Seattle rank? Our region has Vibrant civic institutions Active voters Innovative social entrepreneurs A strong culture of volunteerism and philanthropy

But…the “Seattle Freeze” is real

What can we do to improve greater Seattle’s civic health?

Civic Knowledge Make education our most important civic health investment. Close the achievement gap.

“Civic engagement and volunteering is the new hybrid health club for the 21st century— it's free to join and miraculously improves both your health and the community's through the work performed and the social ties built.” --Harvard Kennedy School, The Saguaro Seminar

Leverage the power of networks and hubs to foster connectivity. Civic Connection

Civic Trust Bring residents and leaders together for productive dialogue and decision making.

Civic Action As a health care professional, how can you include civic health as a metric in your work? What support do you need? Who are your natural allies and potential partners?

And as a neighbor, how can you build our community’s social capital and civic health?

Improve civic health as a way to strengthen economic, social, educational and public health outcomes. Ensure that every resident has the opportunity to contribute to and benefit from our civic health.
