MAINTAINING LIFE Necessary Life Functions

What does the the highly organized human body do?  Organ systems do not work in isolation  Work together to promote well being of entire body

What does the the highly organized human body do?  It is important to identify the most important organ systems contributing to each function

Necessary Life Functions  LET’S ACT IT OUT!!  Break into groups of 3-4 (We will need 8 in total)  I will come around and assign you a necessary life function  Work with your group to come up with a skit to act out your life function  GET AS CREATIVE AS YOU WANT (THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX)

Necessary Life Functions  Maintaining Boundaries  “Inside” remains distinct from “outside”  External cell membranes– allows needed substances in and prevents unwanted ones  Integumentary system  Prevents organs from drying, bacteria, and from heat, sunlight, and chemical substances

Necessary Life Functions  Movement  Muscular system for locomotion  Skeletal system provides framework that the muscles pull on when moving  Movement of substances  Blood, food, urine are propelled through internal organs  cardiovascular, digestive, and urinary systems

Necessary Life Functions  Responsiveness (Irritability)  Sense change (stimuli) in environment and then react  Cut/burn your hand, pull it away  No thought, it just happens!  Nervous system – nerves are most responsive, but all body cells are somewhat irritable

Necessary Life Functions  Digestion  Break down ingested food into simple molecules and absorb nutrients  Absorbed into the blood  Cardiovascular system – distributes nutrient rich blood  Digestive system

Necessary Life Functions  Metabolism  Chemical reactions within the body  ATP production  Digestive and Respiratory systems – make nutrients and oxygen available in blood  Cardiovascular system distributes substances  Regulated by hormones – Endocrine system

Necessary Life Functions  Excretion  Removing waste (excreta) from body  Produced during digestion and metabolism  Digestive system – rids the body of indigestible food  Urinary system – disposes nitrogen containing metabolic waste

Necessary Life Functions  Growth  Increase in size  Increase in number of cells  Cell constructing processed must occur faster than cell-destroying ones
