The event will be a 5k run/walk and will take place downtown Columbia, Mo on May 4, 2009 at 9 a.m. Previous Race for the Cure events have substantially benefited local and nationwide efforts to help cure breast cancer and mid-Missouri is excited to join the efforts as an affiliate.   Race for the Cure has been a large contributor to breast cancer efforts. St. Louis’s 2007 Race for the Cure had over 67,000 participants and raised more than $3.2 million dollars. Seventy-five percent of the money raised stayed in the local communities efforts against breast cancer while the remaining 25 percent went towards Susan G. Komen’s nationwide efforts.   Iris Calloway, mid-Missouri affiliate vice president, said “We are very excited to be an addition to what I would consider one of the most successful and influential organizations existing. We are looking forward to a great turnout and a very rewarding experience, but much of this events success is reliant upon volunteers, participants, and sponsors and we have faith that they will make this an event to stand out in the fight against breast cancer.”   Susan G. Komen for the cure has been one of the most donated to not-for-profit charities for more than 10 years and has been rewarded numerous times for their outstanding achievement with successful fundraising to aid in the search for a breast cancer cure. Through events like Race for the Cure they have been able to invest over $1 billion to date to benefit breast cancer awareness, education, research, and underprivileged women. To do your part in the fight against breast cancer visit or contact Elizabeth Mendenhall at for more 
