Alan WatsonIntroduction to C4, 07/06/014 Introduction to Fourth Year Aims & Objectives: 1) To enable you to study a range of Physics topics to the depth appropriate for a career in Physics, & to permit you to select these topics according to your interests & career objectives. 2) To Develop skills of independent study and research By the end of the year you should: 1) Have shown the ability to study to the depth required for a future research scientist. 2) Have demonstrated a capacity for research by carrying out a substantial research project

Alan WatsonIntroduction to C4, 07/06/015 Introduction to Fourth Year You already have a wide range of skills and a solid knowledge base in: Physics Mathematics Computing Experimental techniques Now you are going to put these skills together in a major project. The well- funded research programmes in the School give you access to the latest equipment and to top-flight research teams. The Critique is your opportunity for an independent critical study leading to a major dissertation. TiP goes here

Alan WatsonIntroduction to C4, 07/06/016 Introduction to Fourth Year Equally you will be hearing in lectures about Frontier Physics from people who are actually doing it. Small informed classes mean the lecturers relish questions and interchange. It is in your interest to make best use of this situation.

Alan WatsonIntroduction to C4, 07/06/017 Introduction to Fourth Year You obtain comparability with other European qualifications, which is advantageous for taking employment elsewhere in Europe. The year also counts towards Chartered Physicist status. In practical terms, you will be able to walk into a research lab and perform usefully right away. If you go on to a PhD programme, you hit the ground running.

Alan WatsonIntroduction to C4, 07/06/018 Introduction to Fourth Year ActivityCredits PHY/PWEPWAPWT/TPAM Lecture Courses Incl. Critique Techniques in Physics 10 (optional) 10- PROJECT40 TOTAL120 Relative Weighting of Years Year 2 = 20% Year 3 = 40% Year 4 = 40% Credits in Fourth Year

Alan WatsonIntroduction to C4, 07/06/019 Introduction to Fourth Year Assessment Lecture courses 24 lectures + 2 hour exam Non-assessed problems (solutions given out for revision) TiP and ADAT are continuously assessed.Tutorials You will have a personal tutor, for guidance & help with difficulties 1 hour tutorials either fortnightly or monthly Matters needing immediate attention can be taken to tutor at any (reasonable) time

Alan WatsonIntroduction to C4, 07/06/0110 Option Choices The Course Structures show how many options you can take per term and what the prerequisites are. Please complete and hand in your Option forms to the Teaching Office by the end of term. They are not binding yet, but are essential input to constructing the Fourth Year timetable. Choices can be changed up to Friday 5pm in the second week of the term the course is taken in. When examination timetables appear, you must let myself and the Registry know immediately of any problems. Tutorial advice is available over choices.

Alan WatsonIntroduction to C4, 07/06/0111 Meeting Next Term There will be a further, more detailed meeting which all MSci students must attend at 9am sharp on the first day of the Autumn term, in the Small Lecture Theatre.
