DIABETIC EYE SCREENING

What is Diabetic Eye Screening? Diabetic eye screening means taking a photograph of the inside of your eyes with a special camera. People with diabetes have too much sugar in their blood. Eye screening can help to find out if the sugar in your blood is hurting your eyes. If the sugar in your blood is damaging your eyes, your GP can meet with you and help you to stop this from becoming worse. You may go to the special screening clinic at the doctors or in the hospital.

On the day of your appointment If you wear glasses bring them to your appointment. Bring a pair of sunglasses to wear for a few hours after the test. Bright lights may hurt your eyes. If you have a Purple Folder bring it along. What will happen at my appointment? You will be asked to read letters to see how well you can see. We will put eye-drops into your eyes to help us look into them. The drops will make you blink. Everything will look blurry for a while. A special camera will take a photograph of the inside of your eyes. The camera will touch your face.

The appointment will last 30 minutes After the screening appointment An expert will look at the photograph. They will see if your eyes have been hurt by too much sugar this is called the ‘results’ 6 weeks after the screening, the expert will send a letter to your GP with the ‘results’ 6 weeks after the screening you should see your GP to talk about the results. Remember! Eye screening is different from when you go to the high street opticians. You still need to go to the opticians even if you have been for eye screening. If you are over 12 years old and have diabetes you should come to have your eyes screened every year
