IFMA Annual Meeting October 21, 2009 Rochelle Routman Environmental Affairs Georgia Power Company Georgia Power Sustainability Strategy

Who we are  Largest of four Southern Company electric utilities  2.3M+ customers  9,000 employees  13,000 miles of transmission lines  61,000 miles of distribution lines  High customer satisfaction  Rates about 10 percent below the national average Georgia Power Alabama Power Gulf Power Mississippi Power Georgia Power Alabam a Power

Ga Power Sustainability Program  Housed in Environmental Affairs  Cross-functional team of representatives  Some of our priorities: –Energy conservation & Renewables –Stewardship & Forest management –Community & economic development –Recycling –Transportation –Safety & Diversity

Georgia Power Wins 3 rd National Energy Star Award  Energy efficiency messages delivered to more than 185,980,886 people  Distributed more than 333,000 compact fluorescent bulbs  Refrigerator Recycling Campaign in Metro Atlanta  Over 45 in-store events to educate consumers on the benefits of Energy-Star products  Up to $1900 in rebates available to Metro Atlanta homeowners that implement energy improvements US EPA and US DOE program helping us save money and protect the environment through energy efficient products and practices.

Georgia Power’s Stewardship Programs “ A Citizen Wherever We Serve”  A volunteer program that removes debris from rivers and other waterways throughout the Southeast  Teams work throughout the state biannually  In 2008, 1502 Ga Power employees removed tons trash removed from Georgia lakes and rivers

Georgia Power’s Waste Efficiency and Recycling Program  Waste handling and recycling outsourced to a single vendor  Each facility has a waste audit to help them identify recycling opportunities and reduce waste hauling/costs  Many facilities haul waste to a centralized location  The new standard for waste handling at Ga Power; now able to gather data on waste and recycling volumes for locations Universal Desk Size Containers Haul-back Container

Wind Geothermal Solar Biomass Landfill Gas Low-Impact Hydro Renewable Generation Renewable energy utilizes natural resources such as sunlight, wind, tides and geothermal heat, which are naturally replenished

Solar photovoltaic installations in the Southeast must be cost competitive

Making Solar Work  Long history of support for solar demonstration projects  Next step: Evaluating cutting-edge solar technologies –7 photovoltaic technologies installed on roof of corporate office –4 kilowatts in size each –Collect data for 12 months – work with third-party consultant to evaluate performance –Potential to expand by 2011  Bottom line at this point –Cost-effective solar energy will require continued reductions in installation costs 330 KW solar installation Georgia Tech swim center

The Southeast does have biomass resources

Attorney Client Communication Plant Mitchell 155 MW Coal Unit 1964 Vintage Excellent Location Near abundant wood supply Good transportation logistics Economic Impact Tens of millions of dollars annually in local wood purchases vs. out-of- state coal purchases Increased tax base Jobs permanent to supply wood temporary construction jobs over a two-year period
