University Ranking and benchmarking: How can we get in to the league table? Dr Muhammad Sohail Microbiology

Are our Universities meant to be ranked? Ranking systems are designed by developed countries for developed countries It may lead to behaviors and redesign of strategy to improve in the rankings rather than to do what's right for the local setting It is designed to say who is better than who, rather than how good you are and whether you have improved or regressed Without adequate funding we should not think of ranking

Butit… Provides a baseline and helps with goal/target setting Enhances productivity Streamlines processes and procedures Improves information sharing Helps to better understand stakeholder (students, staff, external parties) needs Ensures continuous organisational improvement/development within the context of strategic planning

Ranking agencies Global Ranking agencies Times Higher Education World University Rankings QS Ranking Regional Agencies: European Union China India Philippines Pakistan

Additional components… contd Number of Research Papers published in HEC recognized X and Y category journals HEC Recognized Journals Published by the university during 2013 and Number of Research Papers published in Impact Factor journals (Only ISI Web of Science/Knowledge

Impact Factor A quantitative measurement of journals’ reputation In any given year, the impact factor of a journal is the average number of citations received per paper published in that journal during the two preceding years. Institute of Scientific Information (ISI) releases Journal Citation Report (JCR) for indexed journals

International Impact Factor Services (Other than ISI) Global Information of Scientific Information (GISI) Real Time Impact Factor Index Cupernicus

International Impact Factor Services Evaluation Method Minimum two Issues Journal that have a valid ISSN No. (Online / Print) & published Minimum two Issues can apply for IIFS and be eligible for it. The IIFS is calculated per year based on several criteria. quality is judged The IIFS is calculated per year on the basis of a points contribution scale on number of articles published during a year. Articles are selected from each issue and their quality is judged. Original Articles/Papers: 100 Citation: 300 Editorial Quality Editorial Quality: 30 Regularity Regularity & International Presence: 70

JIF by GISI yearly/half- yearly/ Quarterly/Monthly Journal Impact factors are calculated in yearly/half- yearly/ Quarterly/Monthly for those journals that are indexed in Journal Reference Reports (JRR) 1 or 2 article At least 1 or 2 article must have been published in the first issue before you submit the journal in online or print 25 journals Total 25 journals are listed

h-Index The Hirsch index is a combination of productivity with impact. A scientist has index h if h of [his/her] Np papers have at least h citations each, and the other (Np − h) papers have at most h citations each. The h-index provides a combination of both quantity (number of papers) and quality (impact, or citations to these papers)
