Practicum Orientation

The Practicum and it’s Purpose  Field Education: The “signature pedagogy” in social work education.  Practicum provides for the integration of coursework & field experience for competent skill-acquisition.  Competency-Based Education: Core competencies and practice tasks explicitly outline a student’s learning needs for their professional SW development. FY: Practicum Enrollment FT Foundation Year Practicum is conducted during the fall & spring semesters concurrently with coursework. CONCURRENT Fall/Spring enrollment: Fall: SWK 5413 Practicum I - 3 hours credit Spring: SWK 5423 Practicum II - 3 hours credit Course credit over two semesters= 6 hours total * Today’s attendance is required for enrollment access.

FY: Practicum 460 Hours Starts with FY SEMINAR: 3 days x 7 hours = 21 hrs 9:00 – 5:00 Thurs., Aug. 27, Sept. 3 & Sept. 10. Zarrow Hall, Community Room PRACTICUM begins the week of Sept. 17, 2015 CONCURRENT Schedule - Fall/Spring ~ 460 total hours: hours per week x 27 weeks approx.  Attend: Practicum Orientation – Today  Consider: Field Unit placement options  Complete: Practicum Application Due Aug. NOON  IPT (Intern Placement Tracking) software  Student Detail Page, Application + Resume

Intern Placement Tracking (IPT) = 1. In your packet, locate default IPT log-in information Log in and immediately change your username & password to OU and password 2. Under the Student Detail tab, fill out your basic info in the top half and add a photo 3. Go back to the Home tab and click on “My Forms” on the left hand side View the Application for Field Instruction, complete all of the sections & electronically sign to submit [SAVE along the way!] For additional help please visit: and click on the IPT – Student Tutorial

 Placements: Where are students placed?  Practice Fields: What types of agencies?  Agency appropriateness: Student levels?  The Field Education office will site referrals to students for interview. These consider individual student preferences, agency availability, & overall needs of the cohort. All Practicum communication will be sent through your OU . Establish the habit !

Field Units provide the best Generalist Practice practicum experience possible for Foundation Year social work students. A Field of Practice refers to the focus of services. Due to the needs of agencies and their clients, Field Units vary in design but are essentially offered as a primary placement or a semester switch. Both formats offer multiple agency exposure. Students can expect processing experiences with their peers through monthly liaison seminars and multi-agency tours to enrich their immersion in the particular field of practice. *Students preference field unit options.*

 A) Prepare: Consider your readiness for practicum  B) Receive Sites: From Field Education office  C) Interview: Contact, schedule & interview at site(s) Take Resume, Practicum Calendar & Student Placement Form Conduct yourself professionally at every step!  Confirm: Practicum site offer/acceptance and express your appreciation  Obtain: Student Placement Form signatures; complete all info on form  Submit: Documents to Field Education Office by the due date. Students may not start practicum until all documentation has been submitted. In person: Field Education Program office, Room 215 to Levi Heperi Or, scan & attach by Or, by fax:  Required Documentation: 1) Completed Student Placement form (hard or electronic copy); and 2) Verification of Malpractice Insurance (upload into IPT)  Placement is then Secured: Field Education office finalizes & approves. Completion is due 30 days from the start of practicum and login must be obtained from the Field Education Office, which will be ed to students near start date.

 Modified Practicum Request: Submit this request if the practicum needs to begin or end on dates beyond the Practicum Calendar. The request needs to be for significant and compelling reasons.  Employment-Based Practicum Proposal (EBPP): Must represent new learning different from job responsibilities Must have different Field Instructor from job Supervisor Student must negotiate the practicum/employment placement Final approval determined by the Field Education Coordinator Website Handouts: Modified Practicum & EBPP information

Foundation Field Education Seminar is required… & purposefully designed to prepare you for practicum. Seminar Specifics:  CONCURRENT Fall 2015/Spring 2016:  Thursdays, Aug. 27, Sept. 3 & 10, 9:00-5:00 Location: Zarrow Hall, Community Room Students receive 21 hours of practicum (7 hrs x 3 days)
