ENVIRONMENTAL ARGUMENTS ECONOMIC ARGUMENTS POLITICAL ARGUMENTS LIVING WELL... WITHIN THE LIMITS OF THE PLANET THE LAWS OF PHYSICS ARE VALID ALSO IN THE ECONOMY

RESPONDING TO FINANCIAL CRISIS IS NECESSARY, BUT NOT SUFFICIENT FOR ADRESSING THE PROBLEMS OF GLOBALISATION AND IMPROVING COMPETITIVENES GETING ALL STAKEHOLDERS ON BOARD: RESOURCE EFFICIENCY ROUNDTABLE PROGRAMME FOR CHANGE: RESORCE EFFICIENCY ROADMAP INTEGRATION WITH OTHER POLICIES : CIRCULAR ECONOMY PACKAGE INTEGRATION INTO ECONOMIC GOVERNENCE MODEL: PREPARING INPUTS FOR THE SEMESTER PROCES – SUSTAINABLE ECONOMIC POLICY, REORGANISATION OF DG ENVI, REGULAR POINT ON THE ENVI COUNCIL AGENDA ACTIVELY CONTRIBUTING INPUTS FOR THE GLOBAL TRANSFORMATIONAL AGENDA

TURNING COAL INTO LIGHT IS STILL ONLY 3% EFFICIENT ONLY 15% OF THE ENERGY WE PUT IN OUR PETROL TANK IS USED TO MOVE OUR CAR DOWN THE ROAD 80% OF WHAT WE PRODUCE IS USED ONCE AND DISCARDED ONLY 1% OF THE VALUABLE RARE EARTHS THAT WE USE IN PRODUCTS ARE RECYCLED AT THE END OF PRODUCTS LIFE 80% OF RESOURCES ARE USED BY 20% OF EARTH POPULATION

WEDDING RING: 10 TONNES OF GOLD ORE 10 KILOS OF MOBILE PHONES LESS THAN 10% RECYCLED IN EU MORE THAN 100 MIO EACH YEAR IN THE DRAWERS 2.4 TONNES OF GOLD 25 TONNES OF SILVER 1 TONNE OF PALLADIUM 900 TONNES OF COPPER

HEADLINE TARGET GDP/RAW MATERIAL CONSUMPTION Indicator Land Indicator Materials Indicator GHG Indicator Water ANNUAL RESOURCE EFFICIENCY SCOREBOARD (EUROSTAT, since 2013) DASHBOARD

WASTE SHOULD NOT BE CONSIDERED AS A BURDEN, BUT RATHER AS A VALUABLE RESOURCE – WHICH MS CAN ACTUALLY GAIN MOST? TARGET FOR MUNICIPAL WASTE RECYCLING SET FOR 2020, AT LEAST ON THE EU LEVEL, CAN BE ACHIEVED – THE CURRENT AVERAGE LEVEL ACHIEVED IS 43% EC PROPOSAL IS PROVIDING PREDICTABILITY FOR BUSINESS SECTOR – ANALOGY WITH CLIMATE AND ENERGY PACKAGE THE PROPOSAL FROM THE EC IS RECOGNISING THAT SOME MS MIGHT NEED MORE TIME AND ALSO MORE HELP … BUT THERE ARE CLEAR EXAMPLES FROM THE LEAST DEVELOPED REGIONS THAT IT CAN BE DONE IF THERE IS A WILL AND PROPER ORGANISATIONAL APPROACH POLICY COHERENCE: COHESION FUNDS (CONDITIONALITY) EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITY + PREDICTABILITY FOR ECONOMIC ACTORS + FUNDING + HEALTH AND ENVIRONMENT IMPROVEMENT = GOOD POLICY MAKING

IF PRICES DO NOT REFLECT THE TRUE VALUE AND COSTS OF RESOURCES, IF REWARDS TO CAPITAL ARE DISPROPORTIONATE TO OTHER INPUTS, IF MANAGERS ON ANNUAL CONTRACTS ARE INDUCED TO MAKE SHORT TERM INVESTMENT DECISIONS OVERLY INFLUENCED BY BONUSES BASED ON SHORT TERM SHARE PRICE, IF …

INNOVATION (INCENTIVES) PRODUCTS (DESIGN) CONSUMERS (BEHAVIOUR) BUSINESS MODELS YES ECO INDUSTRIES ARE IMPORTANT, BUT THE WHOLE ECONOMY HAS TO CHANGE

PROTECTING ENVIRONMENT AND HUMAN HEALTH WILL NOT POSSIBLE WITHOUT FUNDAMENTALLY CHANGING OUR ECONOMIC BEHAVIOUR - WITHOUT GOING INTO THE ROOTS OF ECONOMIC THEORY & ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT WILL NOT BE POSSIBLE WITHOUT RESPECTING THE LIMITS OF THE PLANET

FROM FRAGILITY TO SUSTAINABILITY INCREASED RESPONSIBILTY LEARN FROM NATURE

CARE WE OFFER TO OUR CHILDREN AND SUPPORT FOR THEIR FUTURE IN OUR FAMILY PREMISES AND IGNORANCE AND RELUCTANCE OF THE SAME PARENTS VIA THE FUTURE OF THE SAME CHILDREN WHEN IT COMES TO THE PUBLIC POLICIES AND TO THE OVERALL CARE FOR FUTURE GENERATIONS

WE HAVE TO FIX A BROKEN COMPASS (PAVAN SUKHDEV)
