Input Devices

 Identify audio and video input devices  List the function of the respective devices

 Voice data entry / voice recognition  Sound capture  MIDI instruments  Digital cameras  Digital video camera

 Require the use of a microphone  Input data or commands – spoken word  Human speech – carries tones, inflections  Computer – programmed to recognise certain patterns of speech

 Figure 1: a microphone  Figure 2: Distortation  Figure 3: Cleaner sound

 Speech – coded into a sequence of electronic signals  Signals – compared to a set of stored patterns  Match – command or data entered → accepted → processed

Simple commands:  Used to control machines  Type letters in a word processor  Helps the paralysed –  operate a wheel, lighting  Open doors

 Medical practice  Veterinary medicine  Legal practice  Dental practice

AdvantagesDisadvantages  No typing required  Used remotely – e.g. by telephone  Recognition of words is slow  Unsuitable for use in noisy areas  Extensive training to understand particular voice patterns

 All modern equipment:  Contain a built – in microphone  Record your voice  Comments – embedded in a word processing document

 Sound card – required for recording voice or music  Sound card – digitises information → understood by computer

 Musical Instrument Digital Interface  MIDI port:  Found in electronic musical instruments  Used for input

 Sounds are:  Digitized & stored as a file  Displayed on a screen  Edited & played back  Use of appropriate software

 This is a video input device  A sensor converts light into electrical charges  Images are converted into digital data  Stored on flash memory or RAM card  Images can then be:  Uploaded  Manipulated  Printed
