GMC National Trainer Survey What did you say in 2011? Ablett Unit

Results Just Out The GMC have just released the results of the 2011 Trainer Survey. The overall response rate was 45%. A sample of the key results on how well Trainers in Wales are supported in comparison to the rest of the UK as well as your local ranking are contained within these slides. The GMC will be releasing the results on their online reporting tool shortly and we will let you know when these are available.

Training vs Service Demand Key Findings:- Your 2011 local ranking in Wales:- The score considers your perception of how well supported you are in your training role. Out of all UK Deaneries Wales ranked lowest with:- –49.11% of respondents reporting that departmental service demands meant that trainees were regularly, unable to take advantage of formal teaching sessions. –57.97% of respondents reporting that service demands restricted trainee access to the clinical learning opportunities that were available.

Time Key Findings:- Your 2011 local ranking in Wales:- This score looks at the extent to which you are spending un-contracted time on educational activity. Therefore a high ranking is considered to be an adverse result. The results show that there is a reliance on your goodwill to train with Wales ranking 7 th out of all UK Deaneries. We are starting to address this through the Educational Supervision Tripartite Agreement which will be rolled out across Wales as part of the Supervising the Route to Excellence Programme later this year.

Educational Supervisor Appraisal Key Findings:- Your 2011 local ranking in Wales:- The score indicates the percentage of respondents who had been appraised for their educational responsibilities. Wales ranked lowest out of all UK Deaneries for the second consecutive year with just 40% of you indicating that you had been appraised for your educational role and 38% of Training Programme Directors.

Training Support Key Findings:- Your 2011 local ranking in Wales:- The score considers the extent to which respondents perceive that they are supported in their training role both within their department and employing organisation. Out of all UK Deaneries Wales ranked 16 th with:- –87% of respondents indicating that their department was supportive of training. –64% indicating that they considered that their employer was supportive of training.

Attitude To EWTR Compliance Key Findings:- Your 2011 local ranking in Wales:- This score is designed to consider the extent to which respondents are EWTR compliant. Out of all UK Deaneries Wales ranked 16 th with:- –53.14% of respondents indicating that overall the training needs of their trainees were met within the hours specified within the EWTR. –36% indicating that their trainees regularly worked beyond the EWTR limits. –62% reporting that they had changed the way that they taught their trainees in response to the introduction of EWTR.

This isnt news to me what has changed since last year? The Deanery has recently appointed Local Faculty Leads in Health Boards across Wales whose role is to specifically support trainers. The Educational Supervision Tripartite Agreement will be rolled out across Wales following a successful pilot at selected sites last year. Amongst other things the Agreement makes a recommendation on the amount of SPA time that should be provided for Educational Supervision and we are also developing mechanisms to monitor the implementation of this. The Deanery has revised the format of the All Wales Trainer Fora to provide a greater focus on cpd opportunities. In addition, the number of events across Wales has increased to ensure that more of you have opportunities to attend. We hope that these slides have been informative but should you have any queries on the results then please dont hesitate to contact us at
