Ch 12 Skin: the Integumentary System

Terms  Skin- cutane/o, dermat/o, derm/o- Intact skin is the first line of defense for the immune system. Skin also waterproofs the body and is the major receptor for the sense of touch.  Sebaceous glands- s eb/o- Secret sebum (oil) to lubricate the skin and discourage the growth of bacteria on the skin.  Sweat glands- hidr/o- secrete sweat to regulate body temperature and water content and excrete some metabolic waste.

More Terms  Hair- pil/I, pil/o- Aids in controlling the loss of body heat.  Nails- onych/o, ungu/o- Protect the dorsal surface of the last bone of each finger and toe.  Keratin- A fibrous water repellent protein found in hair and nails

Arrector Pili- “Hair-Raiser” - One of the small fan-shaped smooth muscles associated with the base of each hair that contract when the body surface is chilled and erect the hairs, compress an oil gland above each muscle, and produce the appearance of goose bumps.

Ch 12 Terms  albin/o white  derm/o, dermat/o skin  lip/o fat, lipid  melan/o black, dark  myc/o fungus  onych/o fingernail or toenail  pil/o hair  rhytid/o wrinkle  seb/o sebum  xer/o dry

Words  Albinism> Any inherited deficiency or absence of pigment in the skin, hair, and eyes due to an abnormality of in production of melanin  Dermatitis> Inflammation of the upper layers of skin  Lipectomy> Surgical removal of fat beneath the skin  Melanoma> Malignant skin cancer derived from cells capable of forming melanin  Mycosis> Any disease caused by fungus  Onychia> Inflammation of the matrix of the nail  Arrector pili> Tiny fibers attached to hair follicles that cause the hair to stand erect  Rhytidectomy> Surgical removal of excess skin to eliminate wrinkles; also known as a facelift  Seborrhea> Any of several common skin conditions in which there is an overproduction sebum (oil)  Xeroderma> Excessively dry skin
