Place Value

Multiplication Recipe 1. Multiply the numbers just as if they were whole numbers. Line up the numbers on the right Starting on the right, multiply each digit in the top number by each digit in the bottom number, just as with whole numbers. Add the products. 2. Put the decimal point in the answer - it will have as many decimal places as the two original numbers combined.

Division Recipe (by a whole number) 1. Write in long division form 2. Line up your decimal point in quotient with dividend Dot on “top of the house” should match the dot “inside of the house” 3. Divide as normal. Keep dividing until the answer terminates or repeats.

Change divisor into a whole number Move the divisor’s decimal place to the right until it becomes a whole number Move the dividend’s decimal place to the right the same number of places. 3. Put decimal point on “top of the house” directly above decimal point in the dividend. 4. Divide as normal. Keep dividing until the answer terminates or repeats.
