There are 40 key terms that will show up in the exam. Today we will enhance our vocabulary study by participating in a Japanese 'karuta' game.

Karuta is just a simple matching game. All of the words we will use will be spread out on a table. When I read a definition, all of the players search for that word and try to grab the card before anyone else. You may start grabbing as soon as I start reading, but if you grab the wrong card, you will get a one point penalty as well as a one round penalty. To get to match 2, you can’t be in last place. To get to match 3, you can’t be in last place. To get to match 4, you can’t be in the last two places.

Please make four groups as equal as possible. Pick one desk to be your table and spread out the karuta cards face up on the table so everyone can see them. Remember: If you grab the wrong card, you will get a penalty. You may start grabbing as soon as I start reading. Once you have grabbed a card, hold onto it. That is how we keep score in karuta.

If you had the fewest in your group, you are out! You can stand around and watch the action. If you are still playing, please make three equal groups. Pick one desk to be your table and spread out the new set of karuta cards face up on the table so everyone can see them. Remember: If you grab the wrong card, you will get a penalty. You may start grabbing as soon as I start reading. Once you have grabbed a card, hold onto it. That is how we keep score in karuta.

If you had the fewest or second fewest in your group, you are out! You can stand around and watch the action. If you are still playing, surround a single desk. Spread out the last set of karuta cards face up on the table so everyone can see them. Remember: If you grab the wrong card, you will get a penalty. You may start grabbing as soon as I start reading. Once you have grabbed a card, hold onto it. That is how we keep score in karuta.
