Agenda 1.Return Papers 2.Discuss Strengths and Weaknesses 3.Begin Lesson on Egyptian Writing

Bellringer Write down five facts you thought were interesting about ancient Egypt.

Why do we write? Take two minutes with the person sitting next to you and come up with as many different reason for writing as you possibly can.

Communication Writing is a form of communication. Writing allows us to communicate ideas and keep record of events that happened.

Males Only Only males were allowed to learn how to write. They were taught by priest in schools near the pyramids. The name given to a person that keeps records for the government is a scribe.

Difficult at First Writing was extremely difficult at first because nothing was uniform. Writing was merely pictures that scribes made in order to try to tell a story.

Your turn to Write Try writing as the ancient Egyptians. You can only write using pictures. Threre can’t be any numbers or letters. Only drawings.

Test Run Dog Water Sky Tree Hunter Artist

Create a Paragraph Create a paragraph telling your friend about something you did over the holiday. The same rules as before apply. You can not use letters or numbers. Only pictures. Leave a space underneath each line of your drawing so your friend can write down what they think you are saying.

Pictures What are the problems with writing in pictures? What are the benefits of writing in the form of pictures? What can we do to make it more efficient?

Homework Try to translate the handout for homework. I will be collecting it tomorrow.

Closure Today we learned how the ancient Egyptians first began to write and keep track of records.
