DETERMINATION OF TOTAL PARTICULATES USING A HIGH VOLUME AIR SAMPLER.

Air is drawn through a high-efficiency filter at a known volumetric flow rate to determine total particulates per cubic meter. A dry, pre-weighed filter is placed in the sampler, and the sampler is allowed to run for 2 to 4 hours. The flow rate of air through the sampler is determined at the beginning and at the end of the sampling period, and the average flow rate is used to calculate the total amount of air passing through the sampler during the sampling period. The filter is dried and weighed after sampling and the gain in weight is determined. The number of micrograms per cubic meter of particulate can then be calculated.

CAUTION: Running the sampler with a clogged filter may cause the unit to overheat. The unit should be stopped if the temperature exceeds 170 o F (76 o C).

DETERMINATION OF GROUND LEVEL OZONE The Zuika optical card reader was developed for THE GLOBE Program. Test cards are exposed to the air for one hour. Then, they are inserted into the optical card reader, which gives the ozone concentration in ppb.
