Safety Programs Require Focus and Planning Having the right people in the right place. You have to have the right people in place all the way from the top to the highway. Everyone has to understand and believe that Safety is a TOP Priority. When hiring people, make Safety a part of your interview process, ask questions about their view on Safety. Have written hiring criteria for each position. Do good through background investigations. MVR’s not just drivers

Safety Programs Require Focus and Planning Background Investigations PSP Reports, Pre-Employment Screening Program, CSA violations Credit Reports (if applicable) Previous Employment verifications Stick to your written qualification criteria, do not reduce your qualifications just because you need an employee.

Safety Programs Require Focus and Planning Assigning responsibilities in all areas of Safety Management Have a mission statement and within that statement, have verbiage that speaks to how you and your company view Safety, and how you want all your employee’s to view Safety. Communicate that mission statement to all employee’s and make new employees aware of it during orientation. Have a member of top management speak to new employee’s during orientation.

Safety Programs Require Focus and Planning Have each person that is in charge of each department present their information as part of orientation. Have that person convey how Safety relates to their department. IE: Paperwork/bill of lading Permits Escorts Hours of service Trailer operations Maintenance shops, truck/trailer

Safety Programs Require Focus and Planning Satellite systems Cargo Securement Customer Service Highway Safety Fuel purchasing Payroll Everyone in your organization should have a responsibility for Safety.

Safety Programs Require Focus and Planning Training Hours of Service Make sure the person who does the HOS training understands the regulations and FMCSA’s interpretations of the regulations. Use the correct reference material to train HOS, IE: Train with your log book if you still use paper Use the correct material if using E Logs If your using systems such as Rapid Log, JJ Keller to audit logs, can they cross reference things like, Tolls/EZ Pass, fuel stops, roadside inspections etc

Safety Programs Require Focus and Planning Developing Driver Disciplinary systems for falsification of records. Work with your insurance carrier, or TPA (Third Party Claims Administrator) to get examples of systems other carriers are using for this purpose. Understand your operation and determine what may work best for you. Point systems Awards systems Written Employee Warnings Termination

Safety Programs Require Focus and Planning Creation of award system to recognize compliance. Award drivers for not having any log violations on internal audits for over hours, form and manner. Award drivers who do not have any violations when logs are audited against EZ Pass, fuel stops, GPS systems, roadside inspection locations. Award drivers who have clean roadside inspections. Any combination of the above, use your imagination to fit your operation.

Safety Programs Require Focus and Planning Addressing daily Safety requirements and reducing accidents in the yard and on the road. Everyone in your operation should remind drivers, mechanics, yard workers to be Safe everyday. Shop Foreman, Yard Supervisors, should do pre- shift Safety reminders such as Tool Box Talks, (work with your insurance carrier or TPA (Third Party Claims Administrator) Do JSA’s (Job Safety Analysis), take a look at job functions you know are potentially more dangerous than others first, but review those functions to see if you can make them Safer.

Safety Programs Require Focus and Planning CSA, Compliance, Safety, Accountability! *Carriers should know what their CSA numbers are on a regular basis. *Communicate yours numbers to your fleet. *Let your fleet know what areas they need to do better in. *File DataQ’s to remove violations that are not violations and that are not your violations. *Cargo Securement, Securement violations have been moved into the Maintenance BASIC

Safety Programs Require Focus and Planning In closing, keep your fleets Safe, Reduce Accidents and Claims and you will be more Profitable. Always end your conversations with your drivers, mechanics, riggers, crane operators, employees by saying, Have a Safe trip Have a good ride Be Safe Have a Safe Day Have a Safe Lift Safe Travels home to all of you!
