Protects the body from harmful environmental influences such as – mechanical damage, pathogenic organisms, etc. Sensation through: –Touch –Pressure –Pain & Temperature

2 layers –Dermis & Epidermis Dermis- sensitive connective tissue layer of skin below the epidermis, and contains nerve endings, sweat glands, sebaceous glands, blood vessels, and lymph vessels. Epidermis- the outer, protective, nonvascular layer of skin that vertebrates while covering the dermis.

Sweat glands- tubular glands that are found everywhere in the skin of humans. Sebaceous glands- any various glands that are located in the dermis that open into a hair follicle. –Hair follicle- a tubular enfolding of the epidermis containing the root of a hair.

People are born with different types of skin colors. –Some people have the ability to tan from sunlight –People with the albinism disease (albinos) can’t get dark.

Two irritations: –Acne & Warts

Caused by a viral infection Can be removed by surgery, freezing, or application of caustics Can be prevented by washing skin while bathing Don’t touch someone else’s wart !!!

Mostly found in the face, back, neck, and shoulders You can treat your acne with Acne wash from any local drug store

Symptoms of acne are forming bumps or heat rashes You can prevent acne by removing your makeup before sleeping, and most likely washing yourself by showering. The cause of acne is unknown. Occurs mainly between the ages of 14 – 20

Example: Sunburn This affects the epidermis causing major pain, redness, and swelling.

Affects both the dermis and epidermis causing redness, pain, swelling, and blisters. If this burn isn’t properly treated, it then gets worse, which becomes a third degree burn.

Affects the dermis, epidermis, and hypodermis causing vessels to become visible, and charring of skin or a translucent white color. After healing this burn, they most likely turn into scars.

Keratin- a tough protein substance that is a chief ingredient of hair, nails, horns, and hooves. Epithelial cells- closely packed cells forming the epithelium. Adipose tissue- a type of connective tissue that contains stored cellular fat.
