 Something your reach for  Takes planning and effort  Important to your self-esteem (the way you feel about yourself)  Should be realistic GOALS

 A goal that is very clear and easily understood. SMART GOAL

 S = SPECIFIC  M = MEASURABLE  A = ATTAINABLE  R = REALISTIC/RELEVANT  T = TIMEBOUND & TRACKABLE SMART GOAL

 It is the what, by whom, where and when.  Sometimes it may even state why it is important. SPECIFIC

 Includes amounts, times of days, number of minutes, sec., hours, etc. and other milestones for gauging success- ex. I want to run the mile in under 7 minutes. been said that what can’t be measured can’t be managed. MEASURABLE

 Be reasonable/realistic: is your plan attainable given what is presently happening in your life? ATTAINABLE/ACHIEVABLE

 Be sure your plan is meaningful/important to you.  Do those things that are most important and in line with your long term mission. RELEVANT

 Record your progress regularly to measure your achievements.  Must have an end point. TRACK-ABLE TIMEBOUND

Failing to plan is planning to fail.

Guidelines for setting GOALS

 What do you do well?  What do you enjoy doing?  What are the most important things in your life? 1. Understand Yourself

 A goal should tell you exactly what you want and should be measurable.  For example: I want to score 10 lacrosse goals this season.  “10 goals” is clear and specific. 2. Make clear, specific Goals

 Say “ I want to lose 5 pounds by Christmas” rather than “I don’t want to be so fat.” 3. Goals Should Be Positive

 Give yourself a reasonable deadline in which to accomplish your goal. 4. Set Time Limits

 If your ultimate goal is to be a professional basketball player, a realistic, specific short-term goal would be to make the varsity basketball ball team. 5. Break Long Term Goals Down Into Smaller Parts

 Keeping your written goals where you can see them will help keep you focused on achieving them. 6. Write Your Goals Down

 Evaluate your progress towards your goals. Are you doing what needs to be done to meet your goals? If not, what can you do to get back on target? 7. Check Your Progress

Long Term Goals vs. Short Term Goals =

Short Term Goals help you achieve Long Term Goals Start a training program Follow a nutritious diet high in carbohydrates Get plenty of rest Increase distance weekly Visualize crossing the finish line Short term: Long term: Run the Race
