Family spends time together The same 2 children (Ahmed and Sarah) are now at home, together with their parents. The mother holds a small baby in her arms. The father has a hand on the shoulder of his daughter. They are all smiling, they are happy. Spending time with children builds trust between family members and they are better able to respond if a problem occurs. It also encourages children to speak about things they are worried about so parents can solve those issues. If you treat your children with respect, they will do so as well. If you react with violence, children will do the same, irrespective of what you tell them/ 37

Parents involved in school / teachers engaging parents The father of Ahmed and Sarah is speaking with the school teacher (in the school court yard). You can see the children playing in the background Being involved in the education of your children, and knowing the friends of your children, will contribute to their success in school. Be involved but “not too much”, do not forget your children also need their own space. 38

Parents support their children Sarah and her mother are sitting at home, around the table. They are speaking together, the mother is explaining something to Sarah (they are not upset) Talking with your children and encouraging them to confide in you is the best way to protect them from violence. Encourage your children to speak about anything that bothers them. If they trust you, they will tell you when something happens. 39

Children talk to their friends One boy and one girl (not Ahmed and Sarah) are talking with one other boy and one other girl. They all look serious. When you hear or know of violence, speak out in a way that is safe for you. Talk to your friends and talk to an adult you trust. Support children who have experienced violence and do not stigmatize them 40

Children talk to adults they trust One girl (not Sarah) is sitting in a house with an adult man and an adult woman. They are talking together, they are serious. The adult man and woman seem to care about the girl. If you or other children face violence, it is essential to talk about it to the adults you can trust. Share your concerns clearly, if you are a victim of violence, you are not guilty and should not be ashamed. Those adults can help you solve your problems in a way that is safe for you. 41
