Paul D. West Middle School March 17, 2012 Presented by Dr. Pamela Seda, Director of Secondary Mathematics and

Back in the Good Old Days: Two Kinds of Math A Nation at Risk (1983) National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) ; 1991 No Child Left Behind (2001) Georgia Performance Standards - GPS (2006) Common Core Georgia Performance Standards - CCGPS (2012)

Developed by The National Governors Association for Best Practices (NGA Center) and the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO) Released in June 2010 Adopted by Georgia July 2010 Currently adopted by 46 states and the District of Columbia

The Common Core State Standards initiative has five main priorities: Equity Preparation Competition Clarity Collaboration.

Standards for Mathematical Practice The Test! The Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC) will administer a common assessment in the year PARCC assessments will have computer- enhanced performance based items that assess both skills and understanding!

1. Make sense of complex problems and persevere in solving them. 2. Reason abstractly and quantitatively 3. Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others. 4. Model with mathematics. 5. Use appropriate tools strategically. 6. Attend to precision. 7. Look for and make use of structure. 8. Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning. (CCSS, 2010)

Our instructional framework will not change. We will still use the 7-steps of direct instruction: 1.Communication of Learning Intentions 2.Communication of Success Criteria 3.Building Commitment and Engagement 4.Teacher Presentation 5.Guided Practice 6.Closure 7.Independent Practice

Only grades K – 9 for 2012 – 2013 school year Students who began on GPS will continue on GPS Students who fail GPS Algebra, may take CCGPS Coordinate Algebra next year. Not adopting textbooks right away (textbook companies are still in the process of developing materials aligned to Common Core) Teacher and parents will be provided electronic resources that clearly define student learning targets. resources

Encourage your student to understand the math, rather than just memorize meaningless steps. If your child doesnt understand, get them help right away (books, internet, peers, teacher, etc.) Communicate faith in your child that he/she can understand math. (There is no such thing as a math gene!)
