History Leprosy has been around for as long as humans have been on Earth. The Disease originated in the countries of China Egypt, India, South Africa.

Common Symptoms Symptoms can appear 3 to 5 years after the person becomes infected with the bacteria. Symptoms include: Muscle weakness Skin stiffness Skin rash Eye problems Enlarged nerves Severe pain

Examples of Leprosy

How it spreads Leprosy isn’t fully understood yet, however some theory's of how it spreads are: Person to person contact Contact with infected soil Nasal secretions and droplets Mycobacterium Leprea

Modern case of leprosy A modern case of leprosy was in the carrier of the disease was a 12 year old boy named Standwa Jamal in South Africa.

Who is most susceptible? Children are more prone to disease than adults. Most Common in endemic countries such as Malaysia and South Africa.

Modern research NIAID has been supporting research around the world for many years. With the Mycobacterium Leprae genome now identified, researchers are looking for ways to defeat Leprosy.
