P2P For More Showcase Presentation Jessie Gardiner John Lasa Travis Sheppard April 29, 2010

Agenda What is P2P? What is Bittorrent? How Does It Work? How To Implement Legal Implications Where is it Used? Statistics Conclusion

What is P2P? P2P: a peer-to-peer network architecture that enables users to share resources with each other Common uses: Limewire, Bearshare, Kazaa, and Napster [1] Peer To Peer Vs Server

What is Bittorrent? Bittorrent: a file sharing protocol built around a P2P architecture. Allows users to download file from multiple sources (swarm) [2] Bittorrent Swarm

How Does It Work? Bittorrent relies on three components: Tracker ◦ Acts as middle-man between Peers. ◦ Directs file requests to peers who are holding pieces of file Seeds ◦ The total amount of peers that are holding a full copy of the file. Clients (Peers) ◦ Users that have previously downloaded file and offer it for upload ◦ Peers generally only have part of full file ◦ Not a seeder

How To Implement Tracker ◦ Invoke a program that maintains client history, and file locations ◦ Bttrack.py Seeds ◦ Any bittorrent client has the ability to seed ◦ Must have full copy of file Client ◦ Clients come in many different variations: ◦ Azurues – Java based client ◦ uTorrent – Very small, lightweight client (312KB) ◦ Bitcomet – C++ variant, allows for http batch downloads

Example 1) Create New Torrent

Example 1) Select Files and Tracker

Example 1) Start Seeding

Downloading 1)Simply to hosting site 2)download.torrent file 3)Open with client

Legal Implications File sharing of copyrighted materials is illegal! In the US, it is currently illegal to download any content you do not own, or did not purchase. Deterrents include fines, and jail time Currently the RIAA is seeking out and charging thousands of P2P’ers a year Woman is USA charged 1.92 Million for 24 downloaded songs

Legal Implications Continued Mininova ◦ 2008 Mininova was sued by a Dutch anti-piracy group known as BREIN. ◦ Was largest Bittorrent site with over 30 million unique hits a month ◦ Mininova was forced to remove all unauthorized content ◦ Now only distributes pay per content and open source media The Pirate Bay ◦ May servers were raided by Swedish police. ◦ Back online is less than 72 hours ◦ April the four owners of the site were commited to prison for one year each ◦ Forced to pay 30 million dollars to copy right owners (not the artists) [4] The Pirate Bay[5] Mininova

Where is it used? Due to its legal implications Bittorrent has had a slow adoption in the corporate world Blizzard has adopted it to distribute its patches and updates Nine Inch Nails distributes all their albums for free through Bittorrent Mininova now distributes pay per download torrents Gamespot uses its own Bittorrent client to distribute demos and patches

Statistics In % of all internet traffic was P2P In % of all traffic 25% of all new torrents are movies The number of files uploaded from 2004 to 2005 tripled

Budget Requirements ◦ Server ◦ Network ◦ Clients Low physical resources Without research and planning we think we could do this project in 25 hours Total budget: $4500

Statistics Continued [3] Files Uploaded To Bittorrent

Conclusion Bittorrent is the fastest way to share and archive large files In the P2P environment, Bittorrent is becoming the largest, and most widely utilized community It is the number one target of the RIAA Has many uses ◦ Corporate environments ◦ Media distribution ◦ Personal file transfers

Acknowledgements We would like to thank everyone who currently uses and supports P2P networks, and Bittorrent in specific. Without your support, this rich technology would have never been adopted the way it has. We would also like to thank everyone who came out today to show their support for our project and all our projects. And finally…… Keep Bittorrent alive; keep seeding
