ID-04 Building Communities and Increasing Awareness & ID-06 (proposed) Building a user-driven GEOSS

ID-04 Building Communities and Increasing Awareness Definition Establish an agreed core set of essential environmental, geophysical, geological, and socio-economic variables needed to provide data, metadata and products in support of all GEOSS Societal Benefit Areas. Involve users in: reviewing and assessing requirements for Earth observation data, products and services; creating appropriate mechanisms for coordinating user requirements; utilizing data/ information delivery systems; and capturing user feedback on an ongoing basis across Societal Benefit Areas. Increase the use of geo- spatial data in all Societal Benefit Areas and in particular in developing countries (User Engagement Target) [also supported by GEOSS Mid-Term Evaluation]

ID-04 Building Communities and Increasing Awareness Definition the title and the objectives do not really match; the communalities with other tasks (ID-01) have to be included; The link between research and user communities should be central How do we link the Communities of Practice (CoPs) to GEO?

Deliverables 1.Identification and utilization of user requirements (e.g. agree on a core set of variables) 2.Awareness raising and community building within and across Societal Benefit Areas (e.g. support Communities of Practice and foster partnerships between operational and research communities; show the benefits of GEO and GEOSS to policy makers, scientific and technological communities, and the public) 3.Indicators development (e.g. for capacity building performance, data continuity, a GEO label, citation standards)

Deliverables 1.Identification and utilization of user requirements -> a Core-set of variables is difficult to agree on 2. Awareness raising and community building within and across Societal Benefit Areas -> this is the focus: outreach and advocacy 3.Indicators development (e.g. for capacity building performance, data continuity, a GEO label, citation standards) -> Not coherent - needs to be revised; different applications of indicators/standards Overall: Activities in regard to developing countries are missing

Related Tasks (non exhaustive) CB-09-04a) Identifying Best Practices, Gaps and Needs CB-09-04b) Capacity Building Performance Indicators CB-10-01b) Building Capacity for Non-technical Decision-makers CB-10-01c) User Oriented Workshops for GEOSS Outreach CB-10-01d) Atlases of our Changing Environment ST-09-02: Promoting Awareness and Benefits of GEO in the Science and Technology Community US-09-01a) Identifying Synergies between Societal Benefit Areas US-09-01b) Communities of Practice and Partnership Development

ID-06 (proposed) Building a user-driven GEOSS Reflect UIC activities, but can/could be combined with ID-04; requires a process of interactions between CBC and UIC – UIC should lead. Options: -Establish as an own task -Re-write ID-04
