Presentation transcript:

Telescopes Before telescopes were invented in the 1600’s people could only see the planets Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn with just their eyes. To your eye they look like stars, but they move differently in the night sky.

Telescopes Galileo was one of the first astronomers to use a telescope. It was called a magnifying telescope. With it he was able to see the orbiting moons of Jupiter.

Telescopes William Herschel ( ) he used this telescope to discover the planet URANUS. At first he was going to call it after the king, King George III. However this king went mad and became a laughing stock so he changed it to Uranus (Greek God of the Sky)

Telescope Nowadays we use very large reflecting telescopes, like this one shown on Hawaii.

Hubble Telescope The Hubble Telescope is in orbit around planet Earth. It is a reflecting telescope. As it is space we can use it 24hrs a day without having to worry about cloudy days.
