NATURAL SCIENCES GRADE 5

Cells & Batteries  Batteries come in different sizes  A battery stores chemical energy. NATURAL SCIENCES GRADE 5

Batteries  Batteries can start electrons flowing  Batteries are a source of electric energy  A battery, two wires and a light bulb can make an electric circuit NATURAL SCIENCES GRADE 5

Batteries  The current starts flowing from the battery through a wire to the light bulb. This current is known as Direct Current (DC)  The other wire carries the electric current back to the battery. If you take the wire off one side of the battery, the light will not shine as you have broken the path. NATURAL SCIENCES GRADE 5

Electricity  Switches on an electric circuit turn the current on and off  This is how a wall switch works to turn lights on and off in your home  The electric energy in your home does not come from batteries  You plug appliances into electric outlets in your walls NATURAL SCIENCES GRADE 5

Electricity  The electric energy in the outlets comes from electric power plants  This current is known as Alternating Current - AC NATURAL SCIENCES GRADE 5

Symbols used to represent different components in a simple circuit Battery/ Open Wire/ LightClosed Cell Switch Conductor BulbSwitch NATURAL SCIENCES GRADE 5

Simple Circuit  Here is a symbolic representation of a simple circuit  Always work neatly and with a ruler and PENCIL NATURAL SCIENCES GRADE 5 Battery Cell Light bulb Connecting wires
