This is Rotary

In the beginning… u First Rotary Club organized in Chicago in 1905, by Paul P. Harris. Rotary Founder Paul Harris u The original four member club met for fellowship, in rotation at member’s offices... thus the name Rotary. u There are currently over 32,000 clubs with about 1.2 million members.

The Rotary Motto is “Service Above Self” u Rotary was not long realizing fellowship alone would not keep a group together... There needed to be a purpose! u First project was creation of public washrooms in downtown Chicago. u Rotary became world’s 1st “service club” u Rotary became international in 1910 in Winnipeg, Manitoba

The Object of Rotary is To encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise.

Rotarians especially try to foster and encourage: u The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service u High ethical standards: worthiness and dignifying of all occupations u Application of the ideal of service to personal, business, and community life u Advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace

Rotarians are guided by THE FOUR-WAY TEST of the things we think, say or do 1. Is it the TRUTH? 2. Is it FAIR to all concerned? 3. Will it build GOOD WILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS? 4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?

Rotary Foundation Group Study Exchange - GSE u Teams of 4 to 6 non-Rotarian business or professional people, plus a Rotarian leader, visit a foreign district for 4 to 6 weeks. u Rotary Foundation pays foreign travel cost. u Host Rotarians handle accommodation, local travel, vocational matching & other activities. u Clubs help host visiting teams and sponsor outbound team members. Rotary Foundation WCS & Matching Grants u World Community Service (WCS) Rotarians provide humanitarian aid to those in need around the world. u Matching Grants. Through a global fund and partnering with other clubs, worthy projects can receive matching grants.

Rotary Foundation Volunteers in Action u Many Rotarians volunteer their time and expertise, helping in foreign countries. u All vocations are needed: - Businessmen, Technicians, Contractors - Agriculture, Engineers, Teachers - Dentists, Doctors and Nurses.

The Rotary Foundation (TRF) Your Charity of Choice? u Rotary depends on fundraising and member donations to fund programs & projects. u Many Rotarians and their spouses are Benefactors of the RF Permanent Fund. u Several are Paul Harris Fellows having made a contribution of US$1,000 to TRF. u A goal of every Rotary Club is to contribute US$100. per member each year.

Rotary Club of Peace River Youth Exchange Program u Every two years we send a local year old student abroad and in exchange, host a foreign student in Peace River. u Members host these young people in their homes for 1-4 months each. u Students become part of the family and many lasting relationships are developed. u Host families are needed for 2009

u Hawaiian Draw u Rotary Calendar u Radio Auction Rotary Club of Peace River Annual Fund Raisers –Proceeds to community/international projects. –All members expected to participate through ticket sales and attendance. u Rotary Fun Night u Rotary Roses u Casino Party’s

u Great Northern Casino, Grand Prairie Rotary Club of Peace River Casino Fund Raising - About every 36 months. –All members expected to participate or arrange for their replacement if absent. –Revenue goes to local community projects.

Your Obligations in Rotary Attendance u Weekly Attendance is a benefit and reward of Rotary. u Goal 100% - Minimum 60% expected. u Make up missed meetings at other clubs, by attending a District or RI event or on eRotary.org. u A Make-up is allowed within +/- 14 days (2 weeks)
