What is a Pirate? A person who commits robbery at sea.

Pirates of the Caribbean When we think of pirates, we think of the movie Pirates of the Caribbean. Most of the pirate attacks happened around the tropical islands in the Caribbean. Some of the islands where the attacks occurred were the Bahamas, Cuba, Jamaica, Haiti and Puerto Rico.

Why did piracy begin? It started when the Spanish explorer Christopher Columbus discovered the Caribbean Islands in This “new world” contained many treasures like Gold and Silver. The Spanish built these huge ships called GALLEONS to carry the New World gold and silver back to Spain. These galleons were the target of the pirates! Silver Mine in Peru

The Jolly Roger Many pirate ships flew their own flags designed to frighten their enemies. The pirates would trick the ship they were about to attack by flying a Spanish flag to confuse the crew. At the last moment, as the ship drew closer, the pirates would raise up their Jolly Roger in order to terrify their victims! The pirate’s would only use their canons as a last resort because they didn’t want to damage the ship that they were trying to take for themselves.

Treasure Maps According to popular belief, pirates often buried their stolen treasures in remote places, intending to come back for them later. The pirates would mark the location of the buried treasure on a Treasure Map!

An “ x ” marks the location of the treasure on the Treasure Map XPoint Treasure Map Coordinate Plane just like a “point” marks a specific location on a Coordinate Plane. Just Like

A Coordinate Plane is formed by the intersection of a horizontal number line called the x-axis and a vertical number line called the y-axis.

X-Axis Horizontal number line (line that goes across). Y-Axis Vertical number line (line that goes up and down). Origin The point where the x-axis and y-axis intersect (Starting Point!). Quadrants The coordinate plane is divided into 4 quadrants - identified by Roman Numerals I, II, III, IV. Ordered Pair Each specific spot on the coordinate plane is written as an ordered pair where the first number is the “x” value and the second number is the “y” value. This ordered pair is the location of a point… (x,y).

What are the coordinates of: Point J Write the answer as an ordered pair. Step 1: Start at the ORGIN and locate the x-coordinate. -5 Step 2: Locate the y-coordinate. -2 Step 3: Write the points as an ordered pair. (-5, -2) Answer: (-5, -2)

You Try! Write the coordinates for Point K as an ordered pair. Answer: (, ) Quadrant: _____ Write the coordinates for Point L as an ordered pair. Answer: (, ) Quadrant: _____

Let’s graph the ordered pair (3, -5) and label it point “A”. Step 1: Start at the ORGIN Step 2: Move 3 units to the right along the x-axis. Step 3: Then move 5 units down (since it is negative) along the y-axis. Step 4: Draw a “point” and label it “ A ”.

You Try! Graph the ordered pair (-4,-2). Label it point B. What Quadrant is the point in: ______ Graph the ordered pair (3,6). Label it point C. What Quadrant is the point in: ______ Graph the ordered pair (3,0). Label it point D. Not in a Quadrant because it on the ___axis. Graph the ordered pair (0,5). Label it point E. Not in a Quadrant because it on the ___axis. A

To graph a FUNCTION, you must have a list of ordered pairs. Once each point is graphed, a shape will form! Just connect the dots!  Straight Line  U-Shape  V-Shape  S-Shape (curve)

 Straight Line  U-Shape  V-Shape  S-Shape (curve) X Y –6 0 0 –2 6 –4

To close our Presentation: Can you name the “Coordinates” of our buried treasure?
