Environmental Laws 1900 to 2010

Between 2001 to 2004 George Bush Backed by republican congress weakened many environmental laws. George Bush withdraws the United States from participation in a global climate change treaty. Private Energy and mineral development were greatly increased with timber cutting on public lands.

The food act of 1990 The key requirements of this Act are that food must comply with food safety requirements and must be correctly described or labeled.

Federal Agriculture Improvement and Reform Act of 1996 The federal farm bill revises and simplifies direct payment programs for crops and eliminates milk price supports through direct government purchases.

United nations and climate change Most nations commit to stabilize the CO 2 by cutting carbon emissions by 25% or less by The united states plans to reduce greenhouse gasses by 83% by 2050.

Save Antarctica 1991) Antarctica Treaty prohibits mining, limits pollution and protects animal species. The Treaty was signed October 4, 1991 and entered into force January 14, 1998; this agreement prevents development and provides for the protection of the Antarctic environment through five specific annexes on marine pollution, fauna and flora, environmental impact assessments, waste management, and protected areas. It prohibits all activities relating to mineral resources except scientific.

Non Renewable resources Antarctica will be ripe for exploitation once resources in the rest of the world become scarcer.

Oil Pollution Act The Oil Pollution Act was signed into law in August 1990, largely in response to rising public concern following the Exxon Valdez incident. The OPA improved the nation's ability to prevent and respond to oil spills by establishing provisions that expand the federal government's ability, and provide the money and resources necessary, to respond to oil spills. The OPA also created the national Oil Spill Liability Trust Fund, which is available to provide up to one billion dollars per spill incident.

Food Quality Protection act changed the way EPA regulates pesticides. Some of the major requirements include stricter safety standards, especially for infants and children, and a complete reassessment of all existing pesticide tolerances.

Safe drinking water act The Safe Drinking Water Act is the principal federal law in the United States that ensures safe drinking water for the public.

Clean Air Ammendments The Clean Air Act of 1990 offers a comprehensive plan for achieving significant reductions in emissions of hazardous air pollutants from major sources.
