China RSGS 1 Data Services in NRSCC Dingsheng Liu Deputy Director-General China Remote Sensing Satellite Ground Station National Remote Sensing Center of China

China RSGS 2 Short Introduction of NRSCC Subdivision of the Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST) Formulating the national policies and long-term plans for developing remote sensing science and technology, geographic information system and satellite navigational technology Coordinating amongst different departments in organizing and implementing nation-wide projects in order to promote remote sensing research and applications Coordinating and develop international cooperation Acting as Chinas contact point responsible for liaison with international organizations.

China RSGS 3 The Structure of NRSCC and Relationship MOSTNRSCC Department of Research and Development Remote Sensing Satellite Ground Station Department of Technical Training Chinese Academy of Sciences Ministry of Education 17 operational departments, spanning across 9 governmental sections and 20 research organizations

China RSGS 4 Data Services in NRSCC Most Departments provide dedicated geographical information services based on projects Mainly 2 Departments provide operational satellite data services to public China Remote Sensing Satellite Ground Station Department of Meteorological Satellite (National Satellite Meteorological Center) Mainly 2 Departments provide airborne remote sensing data services national wide Department of Document Service Department of Land Resource

China RSGS 5 Status of Data Services Most Data providers are manual operation to provide information services case-by-case Operational agencies adopt some formal methods such as metadata browsing, data ordering and deliver with CD-ROM, Tape or Film Some of them can provide network services Example of data service in RSGS

China RSGS 6 Organization of RSGS Civilian organization supervised by Chinese Academy of Sciences Inaugurated and put into into operation from December 1986 Re-organize its structure in July, 2001 Up to now 120 employee including 70 scientists, engineers and technicians

China RSGS 7 National Remote Sensing Center of China (NRSCC) Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) Ministry of Finance National Planning and Development Commission China Remote Sensing Satellite Ground Station (RSGS) China National Space Administration (CNSA ) Coordination of Scientific Projects Direct Leadership and Administration Coordination of Space Activities Budget Support for Operation Budget Support for Development

China RSGS 9 Data Acquisition Continuous operation for more than 18 years Maximum tracking and reception for 19 orbits per day Receiving 10 satellites data at present Data Archiving More than 100 TB data archived on HDDT DLT Increased more than 15 TB per year Operation Status

China RSGS 10 Data Archiving during 2003 Total 175,563 Scenes, more than 14 TB

China RSGS 11 DATA Services Users: About 600 customers over whole country State Ministries, administrations and general industry companies Provincial & local government Academia / research Users in Asia, North America and Europe

China RSGS 12 DATA Services (continued) Satellite Data Supplied Landsat-5 since1986, Landsat-7 since 1999 JERS-1 since1993 ERS-1 since 1993, ERS-2 since 1996 Radarsat-1 since1998 SPOT-1, SPOT-2 since 1998, SPOT-4 since 2000 SPOT-5 since 2001 Envisat since 2003 Resourcesat-1 to be started Data Distributing amount in the forth place for Landsat and second for Spot Data in the World
