Level Up!!! Type 6 : Presenting a conclusion This question type is easy!! You are expected to argue for or against an issue using the sources (You can use the sources you have already analysed in previous parts of the paper!!!) and your own knowledge.

Question stems How far do you agree that……? To what extent did…….? How true is it to say that…?

How do you answer this type of question? Step 1 Step 1 Begin with an opening sentence using the question eg. I agree (or disagree) with the idea that….. OR the contribution of the war to womens right to vote was important to a certain extent.

Step 2 Use the evidence in the sources to argue your case. As you have already written about them this bit should be easy! Step 3 Use as much of your own knowledge as you can. Step 4 Have a sentence to sum up your findings in a balanced conclusion.

Question Question : To what extent was Stalin a good leader of the USSR? c. 50 million killed under Stalins rule from , excluding WW2 war losses. Hitlers reign killed c. 42 million Stalins atrocities (acts against humans) have often been seen as worse than Hitlers. You are expected to have revised beforehand for this so here are some facts on Stalin – make a note of them or remember them. Now look at the sources in your exam:

Question Question : How true is it to say that Stalin was a pleasant leader? Remember – what do the sources tell us and what do you know? Tip: all these sources are propaganda!

Source B: The miners enter the pit between 5am and 6am. They are in constant danger of a violent death or of injury. The winding gear may give way and there are the dangers of being suffocated by foul air or of being scorched to death by the ignition of fire damp (methane). In 1865 in Scotland 12 million tons of coal were raised and 77 lives lost. Source C: The dangers of roof falls and cage accidents were still present, though rarer, and fewer lives were lost than in the past. However, new machinery created more dust and more lung disease. Safety clothing was only being introduced in the 1930s. Government legislation resulted in improvements and the miners continued to press for better pay and conditions. Remember these sources from last lesson? Source A: In the later nineteenth century steam driven fans were installed to circulate air in the mines. Underground explosions were considerably lessened by the invention of the Davy Safety Lamp. Strong, wire rope became more widely used in all pits. Increasingly, collieries used steam engines for their winding gear. Aspects of safety were also improved by Acts of Parliament Look back to your table / list from last lesson. You now already have information from these sources which you could use in your answer. Question 4) Question : How true is it to say that working conditions had greatly improved in Scottish coal-mines by the 1930s? (4) You have 10 minutes!

Now try another one.. Collect a past paper On these papers it is Contexts B, B and C Remember in the final exam it is BAC Find a presenting evidence question in one of these contexts and write an answer to it. Make sure it is on a topic which you have studied!!! Get it checked by your teacher. You have 10 minutes!
