FP6 Project Organisation

Participating in FP6 How Projects Are Organised FP6 research projects are almost always collaborative 1 and implemented using the following “instruments” that specify how the work is to be organised and funded –Specific Targeted Research Projects – STREPs –Integrated Projects – Ips –Networks of Excellence – NoEs –Specific Support Actions – SSAs –Co-ordination Activities - CAs 1 Except for Specific Support Actions, which can be undertaken by a single organisation

STREPS Keyword: FOCUS Management RTD Activities DEMO Designed to generate new knowledge, either improving existing or developing new products, processes, or services, and/or by proving the viability of new technologies offering potential economic advantage

Integrated Projects Keyword: DELIVERABLES Clearly defined, ambitious objectives and results Create the necessary critical mass for focussed medium- term (3-5 years) scientific breakthroughs that lead to major improvements in the global competitiveness and quality of life of the EU

Integrated Projects What is Critical Mass? Concerning resources – Each IP must assemble the critical mass of resources needed to achieve its ambitious objectives Concerning partnership – Min. 3 participants from 3 different countries Concerning duration – Typically three to five years, but more if necessary to deliver the objectives

IPs and STREPs Critical Differences Scale of ambition and hence –Value of activities –Duration –Size of consortium –Type of activities –Type of calls –Evaluation process / key issues –Negotiation process, Consortium Agreement –Follow-up

Co-ordination Actions Keyword: FOCUS C B E F G A D Promotion of co- ordinated initiatives of a range of research and innovation operators, in order to achieve improved integration of European research

Co-Ordination Actions Key Characteristics Key function is to bring together researchers around a specific theme Min. 3 organisations, usually more and open Define research agendas EC contribution ranges between € 100k- € 1m Duration 2-3 years Funding for networking only

Co-Ordination Actions Key Tools Conferences Workshops Roadmaps Website Newsletter Advice to the Commission

Specific Support Actions LAYING THE GROUNDWORK  Support to programme implementation through  Conferences, seminars, working groups and expert groups  Studies and analyses  Fact-finding and monitoring  Trans-national technology transfer and take-up related services  Development of research or innovation strategies  High level scientific awards and competitions  Operational support and dissemination, information and communication activities Min. 1 organisation!
